The final performance show of American Idol was solid, making it even more difficult to foresee who will be the winner of season nine. The sadness of Lee DeWyze’s first two performances were only matched by the sadness of his puppy-dog eyes, while Crystal Bowersox showed a range of emotion, all while negotiating the glossy stairs in heels. It was like a Double Dare physical challenge watching her try not to fall. Still, it would be impossible to try to predict what the voting public will do, the winner is going to be a real toss up.
The judges all agreed that each contestant was some combination of hot, on some sort of journey, passionate, and “what this show is all about”. Well, yeah, isn’t every winner thus far a “nobody” who really wanted to get turned into a “somebody”? The only question now is, once our new winner becomes a somebody, will they remain one, like Kelly Clarkson, or turn back into a nobody, like Taylor Hicks?
Lee had a tough time tonight picking up his energy, especially when he was forced to sing “Everybody Hurts” the official anthem for people who love to cry, but if he wins, at least he gets to sing a U2 song (“Beautiful Day”) as his first single. Crystal on the other hand killed it when she sang “Me and Bobby McGee” and “Black Velvet”, and even though she was great on “Up To The Mountain”, we hope people don’t fault her for singing a lesser-known song by Patty Griffin. We have no idea who will win, but seriously, does it even matter? Second place winners usually fare pretty well after the show ends so no, it doesn’t matter.
Stray thoughts:
- Did Crystal say “Meow is the time” after she performed?
- We are so very, very happy that the winner’s first single will be a pre-existing song and not some dreck like last year’s “No Boundaries” which was a steaming pile of DioTurd-y.
- The paint store Lee worked at – it’s business must be through the roof these days, right? It sure gets mentioned enough.
Tomorrow night, surprises, Paula Abdul and more! And farewell, Simon Cowell, or at least farewell until your next series which is almost identical to this one!
