Of all the words we’d use to describe Oprah Winfrey, “underappreciated” is not one of them. But her longtime luvvuh, Stedman Graham, seems to think that Winfrey’s hometown of Chicago doesn’t realize that they have a true living legend in their midst.

Winfrey, who is going to be ending her talk show which shoots in the Windy City after this season, has certainly added some vital revenue to her city, but Graham for some reason doesn’t think people are grateful enough to Opes for all she’s done. He told a local news affiliate in the city, “I really don’t think they appreciate her. I don’t think they understand the value of who she is as a human being and what she’s done,” and then continued, saying “I don’t think she gets her just due based on who she really is and what she’s done for the Chicagoland area. It’s home for her, and it’s just natural for people to kind of take her for granted — until you leave. A prophet has no honor in its own town.”

With all due respect, Sted, Oprah is literally one of the most famous, respected people in the world, but prophet is coming on a little too strong. Everything she touches (books, flimsy, magical life philosophies, Celine Dion albums) turns to actual gold. What more do you want? To rename Michigan Avenue Oprah Winfrey Boulevard?

We’re going to side with Chicago here and say that maybe their lack of appreciation is just to keep her (and your) ego in check.
