It’s been over a year and a half since Jennifer Hudson‘s mother, brother and nephew were murdered but the singer is finally discussing their deaths on VH1’s Behind the Music. Hudson calls the period surrounding the murders “All a blur, it was surreal,” and says “It was like I was outside of myself.”
She says that after the murders “For almost two weeks straight . . . [I was] inside one room with just family and friends coming in and out. I prayed when I’d get up in the morning and prayed before I laid down at night.” She only began to open up about her loss at  the 2009 Grammys when she sang “You Pulled Me Through” on stage. In the time since the tragedy, Hudson has a baby boy with her fiance David Otunga and will star as Winnie Mandela in the upcoming film Winnie, a biopic about the South African civil rights leader.
The Behind The Music episode premiered last night and will run all week long on VH1.
