One day soon every gay and lesbian celebrity is going to be able to freely date whoever they want, and man, are we going to blog about their love lives then! Until that time, however, we have to worry about horrible things like Chely Wright receiving death threats for being a lesbian. The country singer-song writer announced her sexual orientation of People last May after much nail-biting across America about which famous person was about to come bursting out of the closet. Since then, however, Wright tells the lesbian news site Autostraddle, “My life has been threatened. I get nasty letters every day, ‘I’m through with you Chely Wright, you’re going to hell,'” she reveals. How do people have the time on their hands to write hate-mail to random country singers? Does being crazy add a few extra hours to your day?
Not only does Wright, also starring in a new documentary about her life titled Wish Me Away, have to throw a lot of her mail directly into the shredder, she is also feeling the financial repercussions of being honest about her sexuality. “It’s a big stretch from those new [gay] fans to make up for the fans I lost. It didn’t help my career. My record sales went directly in half,” Chely admits. Considering that Wright has written tunes for Brad Paisley, Indigo Girls and Clay Walker, that is probably no small chunk of change to lose. Still, Wright is confident that she made the right choice. “In coming out I had a feeling that it would diminish my wage earning, and that feeling was correct. And, I am fine with that,” Chely explains. Good luck to Wright, and here’s hoping her haters pick up crocheting or scrapbooking. Anything to keep their hands away from the stamp drawer.
