B-b-b-baby and the dads! (Sorry.) Elton John and David Furnish are showing off son Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John on the cover of Us Magazine this week, and the proud papas are understandably ecstatic. “I’ve never felt anything like it in my life,” said John about when he first held Zachary. “You’re so awestruck. What can you say? You take it in. The feeling, the joy, the warmth of his body, his breathing…I will never forget that experience ever.” Though he’s godfather to at least ten children and the pair are still providing for the two Ukrainian orphans they weren’t allowed to adopt in 2009, this is Elton’s first child of his own, as somehow he didn’t manage to impregnante wife Renate Blauel in the eighties.
Elton and David were there for the birth of their son, through an American surrogate program that allowed both men to “contribute” to the pregnancy effort (“For the time being we don’t have a clue,” said Furnish about whose sperm actually did the job). “Suddenly, at 2.15am on Christmas Day, we were woken up. They said, “Quickly! The baby’s coming!’ We went in and stood behind the bed. Then the top of the head came out and David said, “My God, there’s the head! Then he shot out like a rocket basically—so much so that the obstetrician sort of caught him! It was so dramatic and exciting, we didn’t have time to get emotional. Like there he was, talk about fast!” We’re sure they’ll have a long, long time to get emotional about their rocket baby in the future (can’t…stop…making…song references!).
