Hollywood is full of grateful quotes from 2011’s Oscar nominees, but first-time nominee Mark Ruffalo (the sexy sperm donor in The Kids Are All Right) offered one exceptionally sweet story about how he found out. “I didn’t know the nominations were going on today,” he told Variety. “I was driving the kids to school and my mom and wife called and told me I was nominated, so it was a great surprise.” While fellow first-time Christian Bale is the category’s front-runner, Mark did take home the New York Film Critics Circle nod, so it’s probably worth still writing a speech!
Though wife Sunrise Coigney certainly cares (“[she] is just weeping with tears of joy”), Mark told USA Today that his kids don’t totally understand the significance for him. “I think being nominated is kind of an award…They don’t really get it, but I’ll just tell them something really special is being given to me.” It’s a long overdue nod, considering his terrific supporting work in films as varied as You Can Count On Me, 13 Going On 30 and Zodiac. “I got to find a babysitter! It’s a long trip back out to Los Angeles, but it’s one worth making. I guess I gotta go get this tux dry cleaned…We got a bottle of Veuve Clicquot in the refrigerator that we couldn’t drink because we had the stomach flu on New Year’s Eve, so we’re going to bust that baby out tonight!” They should at least give this guy a Too Cute award.
