It’s been more than three years since the last White Stripes album, and it’s going to be a lot longer than that til the next one. Meg and Jack White announced they’re breaking up the band in a statement earlier today. “The White Stripes would like to announce that today, February 2nd, 2011, their band has officially ended and will make no further new recordings or perform live…The reason is not due to artistic differences or lack of wanting to continue, nor any health issues as both Meg and Jack are feeling fine and in good health. It is for a myriad of reasons, but mostly to preserve what is beautiful and special about the band and have it stay that way.”
Considering Jack has umpteen other musical projects, including bands like The Dead Weather and The Raconteurs, odds are this news really means we won’t be seeing much of his ex-wife/”sister”/drummer Meg. Tour dates were canceled in 2007 over her anxiety problems (around the time of that fake sex tape fiasco), and she’s only made the occasional public appearance since. Check out our memorial gallery and cross your fingers that Meg will be making rapturous faces behind the kit again soon.
