It was the lyrical brain-fart heard round the world: the moment that Christina Aguilera mixed up the words to the Star-Spangled Banner during the Super Bowl last night. America collectively cringed while also feeling bad for her mistake, and of course critics instantly started attacking on Twitter and Facebook. It was embarrassing for sure, but Aguilera apologized for her anthem today and offered a bit of a defense, chalking it up to the heat of the moment. “I got so caught up in the moment of the song that I lost my place,” she said in a statement. “I can only hope that everyone could feel my love for this country and that the true spirit of its anthem still came through.”
While her flub is forgivable, it doesn’t help that in today’s edition of Page Six there’s a spotlight on Aguilera’s erratic behavior and alleged drinking issues of late. Currently living with ex-husband Jordan Bratman and boyfriend Matthew Rutler, the drama started with Christina crawling into Jeremy Renner‘s bed at the actor’s birthday party last month, and sources say Christina’s staff have tried to get her help. One source says that after the incident at Renner’s home, Aguilera’s people “wanted to talk to her carefully about the issue, but they’re not going to because they are scared after she threatened to fire them. Her people desperately want this to come out so she will get help.” While we can’t speculate whether drinking had anything to do with Christina’s singing last night, the woman is facing some tough criticism today and we hope she weathers it well.
