Christina Aguilera‘s been having a rough enough year as it is, the last thing she needed was a lawsuit against her. Seems like someone wants to kick a girl while she’s down though, because TufAmerica is suing Aguilera, claiming that they weren’t paid for her use of a sample which appeared in her Grammy-winning song “Ain’t No Other Man.” TufAmerica claims that they are the owners of “Hippy Skippy Moon Strut” by Dave Cortez and the Moon People, the song sampled in Aguilera’s 2006 single. Sony Music, Aguilera’s label, reportedly made a deal with Codigo Music to use the song, but TufAmerica claims they purchased the song rights in 2004 and they are the rightful owners, so they’d like a piece of the pie too.
This begs the question, why did they wait five years to bring this up? Did they only just realize they actually own the song, or are they just trying to cash in on Aguilera while she’s going through a rough patch? Either way, at least it reminds us that, at one point, Christina made great music.
