Sean Penn’s “Robert Smith: Nazi Hunter” Movie Releases Non-Trailer

by Anthony Miccio

We’re still waiting to find out this is some Funny Or Die prank. While some earlier, blurry on-set photos suggested as such, the above photo confirms that two-time Oscar winner Sean Penn has gone full-Cure for his new movie, This Must Be The Place, about an aging rocker named Cheyenne who leaves Dublin for America to find the Nazi war criminal who tortured his father. This is real, this is directed by acclaimed Italian filmmaker Paolo Sorrentino and it will be competing at Cannes next month.

As shown in the artful non-trailer of outtake shots below the jump, the film also stars Taxi‘s Judd Hirsch as Penn’s father, as well as Oscar winner Frances McDormand and Harry Dean Stanton. The music will come courtesy of David Byrne (whose Talking Heads wrote and recorded “This Must Be The Place” in 1983) and Appalachian alt-moaner Will Oldham. If these guys can’t make a powerful, emotional film out of Robert Smith: Nazi Hunter, no one could.

Between this and Kirsten Dunst‘s apocalyptic Melanocholia, this is going to be a good year for arthouse films that make you go “whhaaaaaaaat?”
