Invented in 1976, toe wrestling became a game made popular in a Derbyshire, UK pub where patrons were looking to invent a new game. And invent one they did, one in which people basically arm wrestle, but with their toes? Honestly, we’re into this for several reasons, first and foremost being that the faces of the lady at battle (above) is the best moment from the Saturday Night Live sketch that never was.
According to Sky News, games are played as the best of three. Contestants begin by locking right toes, then left, then right again. The battles are not co-ed, and toes must be fully examined before a fight, which is nice to know because, honestly, who wouldn’t worry about some dirty foot disease?
In fact, 2011 marks the game’s 35th anniversary championship, and, according to The Telegraph, this year’s “epic battle between arch rivals Paul ‘Predatoe’ Beech and Alan ‘Nasty Nash’ Nash dominated proceedings” (important: Predatoe once also went by the nickname “The Toeminator”).
