In this month’s Vogue, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo star Rooney Mara goes into great detail about the grueling process of convincing David Fincher that she was his Lisbeth Salander. At one point, she says the director wanted to prove she could look strung out, so he said, “Go out and get really, really drunk and come in the next morning so we can take pictures of you.” And she actually did.
The interview features other disturbing tidbits about the director-actress relationship, particularly how the director jokes that Rooney can only eat lettuce and a grape at their lunch together, just before explaining Lisbeth’s undernourished appearance. Scarlett Johansson, he said, was all wrong for the role, because, “Salander should be like E.T.”
Speaking of ScarJo, when we had the chance to speak to CNET correspondent Declan McCullagh about Hollywood’s Internet security woes, we had to ask: Are there hackers in the real world who resemble Lisbeth?
“That’s not a bad representation of the hacker community,” Declan said of Stieg Larrson’s depiction of that underground world. “The movies that I’ll probably point you toward are Sneakers from the ‘90s and the movie Hackers, starring Angelina Jolie. Those are the best three movies. Back in the 1990s, they were not beautiful people. But now you have about a third of the people at these hacker conferences are women. Some of them are actually beautiful people.”
