Zooey Deschanel Impresses Us With Her Clothing, Charity Budgets

Poor Zooey Deschanel: A) Divorce sucks, duh. B) Having your financial details splashed across the Internet because you’re getting a divorce sucks harder. BUT, if there’s anyone who shouldn’t feel too bad about what’s in said financial details, it’s the New Girl star.

In the documents TMZ posted yesterday from Deschanel’s paperwork filing for divorce from Ben Gibbard, there’s an itemized list of the actress/singer’s monthly income ($95,000!) and expenses ($22,550) that makes us feel both ickily voyeuristic and proud of her. Look, the girl is a freaking style icon and yet she only spends $2,000 a month on clothing? Even given that celebrities get a whole lot of their clothing for free, we know how much they could be spending. Case in point, Zooey’s Erin Fetherston dress above, worn at the finale of the X Factor last month, retails for $425. For a little perspective, Nicole Scherzinger’s beaded Pamella Roland gown from the same event is going for $2,425 at Neiman Marcus right now (marked down from $6,930). And Zooey’s taste in vintage probably saves her plenty of cash too.

We’re also super pleased to see that the She & Him crooner apparently donates $1,500 to charity each month (and going to skip over the other niggling bits, like the $2,000 a month on medical expenses not covered by insurance, because yowch). We wonder how much of that is just donating her fabulous wardrobe back to charity, and how much of it is going toward organizations like the Innocence Project. That’s the cause Zooey’s raising money for via Crowdrise this month. She’s competing against the likes of Ed Norton, Jonah Hill and Barbra Streisand in Mozilla Firefox’s fundraising challenge — the celebrity who raises the most money from December 14 to January 11 will get $25,000 more donated to their chosen charity by Mozilla. Charity, singing with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and making us laugh every week — sounds like a good way to forget the sad end of your indie-rock marriage.
