Great news for Hungarians and Don Draper fans (LOUD COUGH, I am both):
Here is a mysterious video of Don Draper, played by average-looking actor Jon Hamm (Is he reading this? Is he more into me now? Am I screaming this into a vacuum?) recording an outgoing voicemail message in Hungarian. Turns out, it’s a Mad Men promo for episodes beginning to air all over Europe, including Hungary. Sure, it’s not the best Hungarian. In fact… it’s not very good at all. (You can hear Hamm admitting to botching most of it up at the very end of the video.)
But don’t you see? Us Hungarians are finally getting our day in the landlocked sun! The only time people ever even think of Hungarians is when they’re getting wasted on plum brandy with their best friend, the Rubik’s cube. Hearing Draper purr in one of the world’s two ugro-finnic languages, I couldn’t help but feel a special kinship with the man. It’s like when I watched An American Tail as a little girl in Miami and found out Feivel was Jewish. “There’s a Jewish cartoon character???” I thought while marveling at this tiny Hebraic mouse. One of us.
