Awards season has long been the perfect time for the movie industry’s fresh faces to gain exposure at movie premieres, on red carpets and in a barrage of print and TV interviews. Often, it’s when we first become aware of young actresses, like Oscar nominees Hailee Steinfeld and Jennifer Lawrence last year. This year, it’s not just teenagers catching our eye; a few ladies who’ve been around for decades are finally getting their due as well. All week long, we at TheFablife are saluting these women and looking forward to what they’ll bring us after the last statuettes are handed out on Sunday. We’ve looked at Berenice Bejo’s, Shailene Woodley’s, Melissa McCarthy’s and Rooney Mara’s big moments so far, and now we turn to …
Who: Jessica Chastain
What she did before 2011: A graduate of the Juilliard School, Jessica started her acting career in theater and broke onto the small screen in 2004 appearing in hit television shows like, ER, Veronica Mars and Law & Order. In 2008 she made her film debut starring in Jolene.
Why we’re paying attention now: We’re just going to rename 2011 “The Year of Jessica Chastain.” Jessica managed to star in not one or two, but seven films last year. She’s received heaps of kudos for starring in The Help and The Tree of Life, winning over 35 critics awards, but lest we forget, she also appeared in Coriolanus, Take Shelter, Texas Killing Fields and Wild Salome (yeah, sorry, we missed some of those too). For her role as Celia Foote in The Help, Jessica received Academy Award, BAFTA, Golden Globe and SAG nominations for Best Supporting Actress. And as if that weren’t enough she’s managed to look stunning on every red carpet.
What’s next? With no signs of stopping for a breather, Jessica already has five films in post-production, including Tar, Mama and Wettest County and is currently filming the untitled Osama Bin Laden thriller directed by The Hurt Locker’s Kathryn Bigelow.
