We’re all pretty tough on Gary Busey, considering what he’s gone through. The dude cheated death in the late ’80s after wiping out on his motorcycle, receiving serious head trauma and becoming a poster child for bike helmets forevermore. During an operation to repair his damaged brain after the crash, Busey literally died for a short time! “I saw angels,” the actor told Larry King back in 2005. “I was surrounded by angels. And they don’t look like what they look like on Christmas cards. They’re big balls of light that float and carry nothing but love and warmth.”
But always the professional, Gary drew on his near death experience while making the 2003 movie Quigley. The (reportedly terrible) film featured Busey as a man who died and came back to earth in the body of a small dog. But the day he arrived on the set decorated like heaven, Gary threw a fit because it didn’t match what he personally viewed when approaching the pearly gates. “He looked around and said, ‘I can’t play this scene,'” recalls fellow actor Curtis Jackson. “Busey said, ‘It’s nothing like this. I’ve been to heaven and it doesn’t look like this. That sofa’s all wrong. That mirror is ridiculous. They don’t even have mirrors!'”
Gary then held up production while redesigning the set to his specifications. He was so passionate about the decorations that he got into a fist fight with another actor who also had a near death experience and disagreed with Busey’s description of the afterlife! Call us crazy, but we’d probably side with Busey on this one.
