I know nothing about making movie trailers, but A Fantastic Fear of Everything, which features Simon Pegg as “a paranoid children’s author-turned-crime-novelist who finds he’s being stalked by a real serial killer,” has a trailer that makes me want to shriek and chortle and give someone $13.50 all at the same time.
I do realize, however, that trailer crafting is not so much an art as it is a science. The science…of math! The math…of comedy horror! As such, let me break down the exact equation, as I see it, that makes the Fantastic trailer so, so spot-on:
(1 wee morose child + 1 upsetting red balloon) +
1 horrifically threadbare hedgehog doll +
your haircut from the eight grade +
≈ 30 knife-wielding underpants howls +
1 eyeball mouth = total perfection
