Nicki Minaj loves Lady Gaga. She respects her work, enjoys her style and generally wants her to succeed in all things. That being said, if one more person compares them to one another, Nicki is going to start ripping off Barbie heads with her teeth. “First of all, I’m a rapper,” the “Starships” singer groans when Mother Monster comes up during Minaj’s Nightline interview.“I’m from south Jamaica, Queens. What are the similarities?” We know what you’re thinking: sure, maybe Nicki Minaj and Lady Gaga aren’t exactly clones, but it’s not like we’re comparing Karmin to Kanye here. That being said, Nicki systematically swatted down any similarities interviewer Juju Chang offers up as evidence of her proximity to Gaga:
- Fabulous wigs? “Wigs? Every female in this game wears wigs,” Nicki insists.
- Over-the-top costumes “Ehh. Try again,” Minaj scoffs.
- Their mutual love of snarling monster faces? The fact they’ve each given their fans an adorable pet name? The reality that half to two-thirds of Nicki’s music is just straight-up delicious pop at this point? Okay, so maybe Juju Chang didn’t get a change to point out every parallel between the two. Next time, Juju!
Concludes Minaj, “In the beginning I was like, okay, it’s cool, hahaha, when they get to know me they’ll understand me. Gaga is a fantastic artist. She’s paved her way. She’s opened her own lane. But I feel like I have my own lane. And we never cross, ever!” Unless, of course, their lanes happen to take them in the lace front store on the same day. In which case Nicki and Gaga are going to be veering into each other’s lanes like this was The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift.
