Did Kate Upton’s $25,000 Met Gala Investment Pay Off?

We’re already on record as loving Kate Upton’s entry into the gold trend at last night’s Met Costume Institute Gala. The Michael Kors gown looks like liquid on the Sports Illustrated cover model. But today the girl is getting a lot of flak from critics for her overall look at the event, particularly because she apparently paid her own way — $25,000 — to attend, according to the New York Post, presumably so she could start making her mark in fashion. Or because she really believes in the museum’s mission?

The Daily Mail asked, “Where did her natural beauty go?” in its story, slamming her darkened eyebrows and slicked-back bun for making her look like she’s “playing dress-up.” And The Sun said she looked “shiny and frumpy.” Frumpy … compared to the “Cat Daddy” video? Bloggers got in on the game too, with DIYFashion saying, “Kate failed to wow the crowd when she hit last night’s fashion affair in a face full of heavy, aging makeup complete with an unflattering gold sequin Michael Kors gown.”

We’re not sure what to think — it’s nice to see the girl take some risks and try different looks beyond sex kitten and wide-eyed, corruptible girl-next-door. And we kind of like that she shows the tiniest bit of belly roundness too. So, it’s your turn to weigh in.
