10 Things We Love About 10 Things I Hate About You

Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles in 10 Things I Hate About You

We were thrown into a fit of nostalgia today when we learned that Gil Junger, who wrote 1999’s 10 Things I Hate About You, is going to be writing and directing a sequel, starring Captain America’s Hayley Atwood and called 10 Things I Hate About Life. Apparently, we are not alone in still loving this movie. Junger told Variety that he made more money from the flick last year than he did when he directed it. While we wait to see how on earth you do a sequel to a movie based on a Shakespeare play (The Taming of the Shrew, if you’ve forgotten), and whether it will be any good, we decided to look back at all the ways we love it.

1. The most obvious: It made a star of Heath Ledger, playing tough guy Patrick Verona who is paid to take the formidable Kat Stratford (Julia Stiles) on a date so her strict dad would let her younger sister go to prom.

2. Heath singing and dancing to “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You.” No one was ever so romantically embarrassed. Also, perfect use of a marching band.

3. Julia Stiles does an excellent bitchface. Even when we know she’s just trying to protect herself from heartbreak.

4. Alex Mack! Sorry, we mean, we loved seeing Larisa Oleynik, from The Secret Life of Alex Mack, as Kat’s bubbly sister Bianca.

5. Allison Janey is hilarious and dry-witted as guidance counselor Mrs. Perky, who writes erotic literature on the side. “Bratwurst? Aren’t we optimistic,” she tells Patrick upon hearing how he fake-flashed the lunch lady.

6. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, in his sweet, adolescent days, is the lovesick boy with a mad crush on Bianca.

7. Kat’s totally embarrassing hate poem made us SO glad we grew out of our high school poetry phase.

8. While trying to win Kat’s heart, he stalks her at the bookstore. Our very favorite imaginary place to be picked up by a guy who looks like Heath Ledger.

9. It’s full of other romantic gestures that melt our hearts, like an adorable paintball date and the ultimate makeup gift: a Fender Stratocaster.

10. This movie reminded girls that feminism is hot.
