There’s one 11-year-old that keeps turning heads because of her free spirit, mega superstar parents and her newfound celebrity. Unfortunately, the attention isn’t always good for Willow Smith. Over the weekend she posted a picture to her Instagram account showing off, wait for it, a tongue ring. After 699 comments–some of concern others of admiration– according to various sources, Willow said the tongue ring is fake. Phew. We’re all about self expression for children, but a tongue ring may have pushed the envelope a bit too much.
Much has been said about Willow having too much freedom. In the past she has made headlines for shaving her hair off (even though we still love whipping our hair back and forth) and dying her hair green. We didn’t see the problem with her cutting her hair, after all, it’s just hair. Will Smith has even responded to the criticism of he and Jada’s parenting skills saying, “When you have a little girl, it’s like how can you teach her that you’re in control of her body? If I teach her that I’m in charge of whether or not she can touch her hair, she’s going to replace me with some other man when she goes out in the world.” And that makes complete sense.
But does showing off a (fake) tongue ring send the wrong message? Is 11 too young to play around with faux body piercings in the same way we’d put aluminum foil on our teeth to pretend we had a gold grill? Maybe the reigns need to be pulled in just a little. Kids should enjoy just being kids and we wouldn’t want people unfairly judging Willow Smith for, you know, being a kid.
