Katy Perry did promise us that her 3-D concert doc, Part of Me, would show everything she was going through while on tour, including her rocky relationship with soon-to-be-ex-husband Russell Brand. Now we’re getting a better idea of just how much she’s showing in the flick, which hits theaters on July 5.
In an interview with MTV News, Perry explained that though it is hard to deal with her split publicly, she wanted to show her fans even the ugly side to her story. “The truth will always prevail,” Perry said. “If you were to have seen that movie and walked out and [my breakup] wasn’t at all mentioned, like it never happened, you’d be like, ‘Eh, this is weird. What is she trying to hide?’ I don’t like to hide.”
The movie begins just a few months after her October 2010 marriage to Brand and right before she departs for her California Dreams Tour in 2011. Her intense schedule and her very new marriage just do not mix well and we see how it takes a toll on her. “I’m trying to keep my marriage alive,” she tells the camera.
When asked in the film if she misses Brand, she begins to cry and admits that she does miss him but that she did everything in her power to make it work. She confesses: “I thought to myself, ‘When I find that person that’s going to be my life partner, I won’t ever have to choose [between the partner and my career]. They won’t be threatened or have weird motives.’ Then I started to realize, that’s not true.”
It’s an intimate glimpse into a relationship we’ve watched from start to finish, and after hearing Brand discuss the split on Ellen and even joke about it at the MTV Movie Awards, we’re fascinated by Katy’s take.
