Is it 2013 yet? Vulture brought our attention this morning to a bootleg version of ITV’s trailer for series three of Downton Abbey, and man, does it make January seem like a long way away. A previous bootleg video from TV Land’s tribute to Shirley Maclaine already had us super excited for her character, Martha Levinson, Lady Grantham’s mother, and her priceless interactions with Maggie Smith‘s Dowager Countess. But this is our first peek at what else is going on at the Abbey now that the war is over and Matthew (Dan Stevens) and Mary (Michelle Dockery) are finally together for real. … Or are they?
“But if we can disagree over something as fundamental as this, then shouldn’t we be brave and back away now?” Mary asks Matthew. What do they disagree over? While Mary is getting ready for bed? Scandalous!
“How can you be so disappointing?” she asks tearfully in another scene.
“Mary, please,” he says weakly.
“No! Don’t you see what this means? It means that you’re not on our side, Matthew. It means that deep down, you’re not on our side!”
Oh, noes! Judging from the rest of the trailer, we think this could be about the fact that the Crawleys have lost their money. Or maybe there’s something else wrong? Is he not backing efforts to free Bates? Does he think the entire British class system is a load of crap? Did he root for the wrong cricket team? Arrgh! It’s almost enough to make me get over my fear of illegal TV downloads to watch this before its PBS debut.
