We’ve been looking forward to seeing Demi Lovato speak on Katie today about her battle with eating disorders and the message she wants to send to her young fans who might be going through the same thing. Now it looks like that interview — and indeed the entire episode of Katie Couric’s talk show devoted to the topic — has an extra layer of meaning. According to the New York Post, Couric admits on the show that she also suffered from bulimia when she was a young woman.
“I wrestled with bulimia all through college and for two years after that,” she said at the taping. “And I know this rigidity, this feeling that if you eat one thing that’s wrong, you’re full of self-loathing and then you punish yourself, whether it’s one cookie or a stick of gum that isn’t sugarless, that I would sometimes beat myself up for that.”
So from the time she attended the University of Virginia and into her first two years in broadcast journalism at ABC News in DC, Couric was suffering from the disorder. TV news is notorious for putting extra pressure on women to be a certain size, and we wonder how much her chosen profession had to bear on her physical distress. Regardless, the Post reports, she was able to recover with the help of a therapist and by scaring herself with research into all the horrible things purging does to your body.
We can only hope that Demi’s and Katie’s success stories inspire others too!
