Most people think of Patti Smith as a punk legend. Based on who she’s imagined playing herself and late photographer Robert Mapplethorpe in a biopic, she would also make an utterly magnificent casting director. “I remember the very first time I saw Kristen Stewart and Rob Pattinson together, when they were younger, and I thought, ‘Those two kids could have easily played us when they were first starting,’ ” the singer told Entertainment Weekly. “There’s something in his eyes. And Robert [Mapplethorpe] was also a bit shy, and a bit stoic. Kristen has a very special quality. She’s not conventionally beautiful, but very charismatic.” Uh, we don’t know if we would really characterize Kristen as either, but either way we love this casting call. Leather jackets, soulful longing, starving artistry: This is all we want to see Rob and Kristen do, forever. Let’s get these kids back to their roots! And by roots, we mean heaving sighs!
Smith is currently working on the film adaptation of her memoir Just Kids with Oscar nominated Hugo screenwriter John Logan. If Kristen is otherwise disposed, Patti has some other starlets in mind. “I love Mia Wasikowka. I love the girl who plays Hannah – Saoirse Ronan,” Smith raved. “She’s brilliant. The depth of that girl.” Despite her rave review for Stewart, Patti is also considering giving what would be a career-making role to a yet unknown actress. “Robert and I were very young. We were 20. We were unknowns, and I think it should be unknowns in the film, and young,” she muses. Oh, come on! Don’t dangle a brooding KStew and RPattz in front of our noses, then yank them away. Think of all the sulking! The sulking, Patti! Do you want your biopic done right, or don’t you?
