We’re Thankful For 4 More Years Of The Obama Girls: A Pop-Culture Thanksgiving

As we travel home, hop into our elastic Thanksgiving pants and proceed to inhale turkey over the next week before passing out on the sofa with the football game on, we must take a time to pause and reflect. What are we thankful for? What makes us happy, and how can we improve ourselves for the upcoming year as 2012 comes to a close? Though there are still a couple of days before Thanksgiving, I already began to ponder these thoughts. Yes, I love my family. Yes, I adore my friends. But what am I really thankful for? Four more years of Sasha and Malia Obama in the White House!

Whatever your politics may be, you can’t deny that the 11- and 14-year-old daughters of Barack and Michelle Obama are adorable. From the intellect they’ve inherited from their brilliant parents to their keen fashion senses, the first daughters are role models and destined for greatness themselves. Here are four reasons why I love the Obama girls and why I’m looking forward to spending four more years with them:

1. We’re Watching Them Grow Up – Sasha and Malia were just 7 and 10 when they entered the White House, and four more years of an Obama presidency means Malia will be 18 and Sasha will be 15 by the time Obama’s term is complete. Thus, some of their most formative years and milestones will be spent at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Lucky for us, we’ll hopefully get to share some of these experiences with them. In the next several years, Malia will be taking driving lessons, going on college tours, and dare we say, dating? We can’t wait to see a photo of the Secret Service accompanying Malia and a Sidwell student to dinner and a movie.

2. They Will Become Female Role Models – As Sasha and Malia grow up, they’ll begin to formulate their own political opinions. Will they become as politically active as their father? Will they take on causes like childhood obesity as their mother has? Obama said himself that he encourages his daughters to speak up about issues they care about as they get older. It’ll be interesting if they dodge the spotlight or utilize their public roles to advocate for causes dear to them. Regardless, their mere presence as smart, beautiful, African American young women living in the most famous house in the world is inspiring already.

3. They are Fashion Icons – If any two girls could succeed Michelle Obama as America’s reigning fashion icon, they are her very own daughters. These girls always look fly and have a wardrobe many adults would envy, let alone teenagers! For most 10-year-olds in America, a hand-me-down consists of a dress from your sister that may or may not have a hole on it. Not for Sasha Obama. The younger sister was seen wearing her sister’s “old” Chris Benz skirt earlier this year. Not too shabby. Since Sasha’s and Malia’s images have been carefully crafted over the last several years, we’re excited see their personal styles emerge. Other first children like Chelsea Clinton are now fixtures at Fashion Week;¬†will Sasha and Malia embrace this fashionista role as well? Anna Wintour better get on it.

4. First Daughters – They’re Just Like Us! – One thing that we love about the Obama family is how grounded they seem. Despite all of the state dinners, jetting on Air Force One and chilling with Beyonce, the Obama family, and particularly Sasha and Malia, appear surprisingly normal. Like any pair of siblings, the two have chores and must follow strict rules in the house. Malia must learn to do laundry before she leaves for college, and despite the media savvy of Obama’s campaign, technology is relegated to the weekend for the girls. If people say the candidate most likely to win is one you would grab a beer with, then the first kids should be ones you could grab a root beer float with — and we’d totally grab one with this dynamic duo.
