It’s just so rare to completely change our minds about a celebrity, but here we are in 2013…learning to love Seth MacFarlane. It’s not that we ever hated Seth MacFarlane, per say. It’s just with Family Guy, American Dad and The Cleveland Show informing the zeitgeist for the past 14 years, we had long ago suffered from an acute case of McFarlane Overload (Main symptom: extreme nausea and diarrhea upon hearing a Stewie impression.) But despite all of our male cousins quoting everything Seth has ever written since 1999, we realized something as we watched MacFarlane’s first Oscar promo today. We realized we’re basically Seth MacFarlane fans now.
We don’t know where it began exactly, but we first became aware of it when Ted came out. Everyone loved it! Despite all odds against it being a good movie! Then Seth did a great job on SNL and we thought, “Hey! If Seth McFarlane is allegedly dating the beautiful and talent Game of Thrones actress Emilia Clarke, he can’t be a total mutant. Or maybe Emilia is a mutant too. And isn’t that the cutest possible option? Two total mutants finding love together?” Damn you, McFarlane! Damn you and our ability to rationalize any opinion we decide to have!
Even the Oscar nom announcements today! “The last time Austria and Germany got together and co-produced something it was Hitler, but this is much better,” Seth quipped about Amour. Later he joked about getting a Best Original Song nomination: “First an Oscar nomination, then I find a basically brand-new queen mattress on my drive home. This is an incredible days.” Guys? Those are funny jokes. God help us, they are funny jokes. Even the video Seth made with his dad to announce his Oscars hosting gig is adorable! So we’re on board for the foreseeable future. Though if we hear one person say “Giggity giggity!” in the lead up to the Oscars, so help us God, we will turn on that man so fast!
