Anne Hathaway, Jennifer Lawrence Lead Our First Annual Awards Season Style Points Race

|

Bradley Cooper, Anne Hathaway, Kerry Washington, Jessica Chastain, Emma Stone, Jennifer Lawrence, Eddie Redmayne and Amanda Seyfried

Awards season got into full swing this week, and we here at VH1 Celebrity were thinking that these talented actors and actresses weren’t competing against each other in enough contests. So we devised a little race of our own based on something we’re calling Style Points. Our panel of fashion experts — our own Sabrina Rojas Weiss and Ambika Muttoo, plus Breanne Heldman, New York bureau chief at Yahoo! Entertainment, and MTV Style associate editor Maud Deitch — will be grading eight key celebs after their major red carpet appearances (on a scale of -5 to +5). Who are these lucky stars? Jennifer Lawrence, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Kerry Washington, Jessica Chastain, Emma Stone, Bradley Cooper and Eddie Redmayne — basically, the actors we expect to wow us from now through the Oscars. We’ll track their rankings and at the end of all this madness, declare the most stylish star in all the land on February 25! To kick this all off, we decided to grade two outfits from each contestant.

“Major points for the lady-suit, but big big deductions for the early 2000′s emo hair,” Maud says, but Ambika disagrees. “This androgynous, yet romantic Saint Laurent Spring 2013 tuxedo fits her like a dream and really complements her edgy short hair.” Sabrina hearts the ruffled cuffs.

“Love this simple, stark, shimmery Oscar de la Renta column on her. Minimal, but proves less is so much more,” Ambika says. “I’m still not OK with Anne’s short haircut,” Breanne notes, but short-haired girl Sabrina shows solidarity. “She’s showing off that neck to perfection.” Maud says “This makes me think she’ll definitely be a contender for the top look of Oscar night.”

“I find this dress dowdy and a little old for her. She’s so much more fun than this dress, as evidenced by her acceptance speech,” Breanne says, but Sabrina loves that disco queen aesthetic. “It’s refreshing that she doesn’t have to do body con ALL the time (although she totally should keep doing it a lot of the time),” says Maud.

“Everything is perfectly balanced, which is also partly why MTV Style named her one of our top looks of the Critics’ Choice Awards,” Maud says of Jen’s Prabal Gurung. Ambika agrees: “It’s glamorous, elegant and more grown-up, but suitably so, then anything she’s worn before.”

“I’m giving him extra points for channeling a bit of that Les Miz street urchin vibe,” says Sabrina. “I’m loving the herringbone-print on him, which I’m assuming is Burberry, because he normally wears that brand or Alexander McQueen,” notes Ambika. “Big fan of eddies suit with sweater (vest?) look here, although I wish the suit was a little less tweedy. Is he going out shooting at Downton Abbey?

“Eddie is doing formalwear a real service by wearing the crap out of his suit, which has a nice silhouette — not too slim and not too bulky — and is totally age-appropriate,” says Maud. Sabrina complains, “He’d get more points if he’d stop giving me vertigo with these jaunty poses.”

“How stunning is she in this Rochas Spring 2013 strapless gown? Styled to perfection,” gushes Ambika. “Those bra cups hurt me just by looking at them,” Sabrina says.

“I love Kerry Washington’s body; why’s she hiding it in a giant cloud?” Breanne asks. But Maud points out something you can’t see in this photo: “The white a-line gown has a wild horses print all throughout the skirt, which could look super goofy but is actually completely beautiful.” Adds Ambika, “Kerry’s hit a homerun with her Django Unchained tour.”

“I’m not wild about this red dress. It’s just not speaking to me,” says Maud, but Sabrina and Ambika disagree. “This much red on anyone else would make me a little bullish, but on her, it’s cute, daring and fashion-forward,” Ambika says. Breanne worries that Emma’s looking a little on the skinny side.

Sabrina calls the dress “too Taylor Swifty,” and Breanne still wants to give Emma a Twinkie. Maud and Ambika are fully onboard, though. “I love when Emma Stone does this very French, very classic kind of dressing,” says Maud.

“That navy Alexander McQueen dress with the gold neckline, matched with the gold Aurelie Bidermann cuff is just gorgeous on Jessica Chastain,” Ambika says. Sabrina says it’s “a little snoozy,” but Breanne calls it “all class.”

Maud finds the cut of this Prada dress problematic: “It’s a little too prom, a little too easy, and her body is getting lost below the bustline.” Breanne says it doesn’t match up to the Jessica standard of 2012: “Every look she conquered during last year’s awards season was jaw-dropping, so this is a bit of a disappointment.”

“The hair says ‘night out with the guys,’ while the suit says ‘job interview.’ Then again, I have a hard time judging men’s style when they’re going middle of the road like this,” Sabrina says. “How could Gucci not work?” Ambika wonders. “It’s too shiny on him, and the brown loafers are a bad choice. Besides, he needs a haircut.” Breanne agrees.

“I’m not in love with this suit,” Maud says. “It’s pulling a little around the buttons and I think he could have done a little better.” Still, she gives him residual points for Silver Linings Playbook and speaking French. Sabrina thinks the gray brings out his blue eyes, and Ambika calls this a “generic hot” look. Clearly, none of us can be objective with this guy.

“Her beauty look is so major here,” says Maud. But we all agree with Ambika that “something about the fit of the bodice is all wonky,” and we are generally underwhelmed.

“I think this Mario Schwab dress ended up wearing her,” Ambika says. Maud is a little more generous, saying, “She gets a lot of points for wearing a challenging silhouette on the carpet and for wearing separates rather than a gown.” Breanne is disappointed, to put it mildly: “Girl is SO pretty. Why does she do this to me? I’m taking it personally. Amanda, please step it up!” Are we maybe being so harsh because we love her too much?
