Out of all the dramatic and not so-dramatic gown at the Golden Globes, last night, two stood out for being the most forward-thinking and outré. You may not agree with them, you may even be on the fence with them, but you have to admit that both Kate Hudson and Nicole Kidman‘s gowns stand out from the crowd. And it’s a pretty hard crowd to stand out from, considering every A-lister is doing their level best to outshine the other. What makes these two gowns extraordinary is the key usage of embellishment, elevating, what would be regular black gowns to show-stoppers. Before we start, it’s also important to note that both ladies were extremely smart in leaving their hair and makeup neutral — and OMG, did their skins glow — so that their outfits took center-stage.
Kate’s black gown was a dramatic Alexander McQueen. It featured long sleeves and a little train, but the flash of skin, which was so sexy, was provided through a deep key-hole. And all that may be gravy, but the aspect we’re tripping over the most is the gold-leaf embellishment on the collar and the waist. The whole outfit has quite the impact, and is complemented by her little gold Roger Vivier ‘Boite de Nuit’ clutch, which was totally in keeping with the whole outfit. Giving her a run for her money, though, was Nicole’s gown, also by Alexander McQueen. How’s that for a synchronistic moment? The lovely actress’ gown featured some eye-catching bronze studs over the bodice, elevating her in the embellishment stakes. We usually demur from the semi-sheer trend but find the mesh detailing on her waist gorgeous. She iced up the look with Fred Leighton jewelry that was minimal enough not to interfere with her look. We’re sold on both. But who gets best embellishment, then? Which of the two McQueens will you pick? Vote, vote, vote!
