Style Points: Amanda Seyfried on top after SAG Awards

When we decided to track the awards season fashions of Amanda Seyfried, Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Anne Hathaway, Kerry Washington, Jessica Chastain, Eddie Redmayne and Emma Stone, we had no idea how much they’d fluctuate from gorgeous to meh to bleh and back again from week to week. As you can see in the graph above, these stars’ Style Points have been fluctuating madly. And since we’re basing this “race” on the opinions of esteemed experts — Glamour online style editor Nikki Ogunnaike, Yahoo! Entertainment’s New York bureau chief Breanne Heldman, MTV Style’s associate editor Maud Deitch — along with our own Ambika Muttoo and Sabrina Rojas Weiss, we don’t think this is just due to our own arbitrary moods. Last night’s SAG Awards saw an abrupt change of position as Amanda and Jennifer got their acts together and showed up in stunning (and matching!) navy gowns. Oddly enough, last week’s front-runner Kerry Washington sank to the bottom with her white Rodarte. Emma Stone was a no-show at this event — now we’re wondering if she’s skipping out on the rest of this awards season altogether, which would be a shame for us fashion voyeurs. But we have the other seven to enjoy below:

Amanda Seyfried

Amanda Seyfried

Breanne: +5. “Yes! Finally! This Zac Posen dress does everything I’ve been wanting for Amanda all awards season and then some. Extra love for the necklace.
Nikki: +4. “To say I’m obsessed with this Zac Posen dress would be putting it mildly. The dark blue color against her alabaster skin made for an amazing contrast while the mega train added an appropriate touch of drama.”
Ambika: +5. “I cannot find fault with this gown. I also want to have babies with the color. Amanda likes these structural elements in her gown, and often gets them wrong. But when she gets it right, look out world. This Zac Posen gown is the apex of those rare moments.”
Maud: +5. “I love this. Pairing that epic Zac Posen fishtail with that enormous Lorraine Schwartz pendent? Inspired styling choice. This is one of the first of Amanda Seyfried’s looks that made me totally forget that she was ever in Mamma Mia! She looks like a true movie star.”
Sabrina: +5. “Amanda was hilarious on the red carpet, telling E! she hoped Les Miserables wouldn’t win because she was scared to walk up the stairs in that gown. No matter how good Argo is, I think we were tragically deprived of that sight. Also, I want (a knockoff of) that necklace now.”

Average score: 4.8

Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence

Breanne:+4. “Apparently, if you have pneumonia, it’s totally OK to wear a sleeping bag to an awards show. Also abundantly clear: Jennifer Lawrence looks incredible with pneumonia and sleeping bags — when made by Christian Dior — can be totally chic.”
Nikki: +2. “She has walking pneumonia and STILL looks this good in Dior, folks. Suffice to say you could stick Jennifer Lawrence in a burlap sack and she’d kill it.”
Ambika: +2. “I’m not jumping for joy with this Dior Couture dress because, when you look at it, it looked wrapped around her body. Nothing to write home about, even though the color is pretty. But she gets bonus points because her face looks gorgeous even though she was sick that day.”
Maud: +5. “OK, so Jennifer Lawrence’s Dior haute couture is very similar to Seyfried’s Posen, but Lawrence’s overall look is just so perfect. I love brown, wavy hair and a dark oxblood lip on her. Gorgeous.”
Sabrina: +4. “I really like the way the fabric is wrapped around her legs like that — it’s the thing that sets this gown apart from Amanda’s. Unfortunately, it’s also what caused the whole thing to look like it ripped as she walked up to accept her Actor trophy.

Average score: 3.4

Bradley Cooper

Bradley Cooper

Breanne:+4. “Definition of awesome: matching your also gorgeous co-star at an awards show. This is easily Bradley’s best look so far this season and the fact that he and Silver Linings Playbook co-star Jennifer Lawrence appeared to have coordinated their blues filled my heart with glee.”
Nikki: +3. “Bradley, oh Bradley. How do you make us swoon each and every time? Speaking French while wearing a Tom Ford suit, probably has something to do with it.”
Ambika: +3. “Classic tuxedo, good-looking man. A bit safe but no less of a winning combination. Besides, the hair’s moving into a styling realm that I actually like again, thank the heavens.”
Maud: +3. “I love that he spoke French on the red carpet and he looks great in navy, case closed.”
Sabrina: +3. “If we were judging solely on red-carpet poses, Bradley’s hair tuck move here would get all the points. Based on clothing, he’s doing quite nicely with that color, if not knocking me out with cut.

Average score: 3.2

Eddie Redmayne

Eddie Redmayne

Breanne: +4. “God love Eddie and his unique choices. A brown velvet tux just sound ridiculous, but, on him, it looks like spiked hot chocolate after a day of skiing — warm heaven.”
Nikki: +1. “Looks like he’s still on the velvet train! While I prefer him in blue, I love that Eddie Redmayne continues to break the mold in this Hugo Boss suit and has fun with his fashion choices.”
Ambika: +3. “Kudos, Eddie. You made me like brown velvet. Hell officially just froze over.”
Maud: +2. “This guy likes velvet as much as I do but even I know that brown velvet should be approached with caution, if at all.”
Sabrina: +3. “I like his consistency with the velvet this season, but if he does it one more time, I’m gonna get bored. Still, I really like the short, tight pants on him.”

Average Score: 2.6

Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway

Breanne: +3. “Forget her dress (which I still didn’t like, but it’s beat most of her other looks so far this season) — the SAG Awards were all about Anne’s hair. I didn’t think it was possible with this cut, but I absolutely love the way she’s styled her ‘do for this event. Please rinse and repeat for the rest of the season.”
Nikki: +3. “I adore this Giambattista Valli Haute Couture gown on Anne Hathaway. The embroidered corset and full tulle skirt brought a feminine and whimsical touch to the red carpet.”
Ambika: -1. “Great designer: Giambattista Valli. Wrong dress on Anne. It swamps her and I really am not a fan for this half sheer business that’s been afflicting dresses since 2012. The tulle looks twee, not enchanting.”
Maud: +5. “I’m hard on Anne Hathaway but I think she looks incredible here. She paired that amazing Giambattista Valli Haute Couture illusion skirted (something I usually can’t abide by) gown with a classic red lip and even had little butterflies painted on her nails! Yes!”
Sabrina: +1. “The only reason I’m not completely trashing the tulle skirt as too little-girly for Anne is those incredible shoes. My other complaint is that the illusion shoulders are making her look slouchy. After the gorgeous structure of her Globes gown, this makes me sad.”

Average score: 2.2

Jessica Chastain

Jessica Chastain

Breanne: 0. “I LOVE when Jessica gives in to her Jessica Rabbit looks and rocks the ruby and a simple, flowing ‘do. And Sunday night was no exception. But, sadly, I have to subtract points for this beautiful Alexander McQueen number. It just doesn’t fit. Every seam is pulling and puckering like it’s about to burst and I spent the evening waiting for reports of a wardrobe malfunction.”
Nikki: +4. “Looks like Jessica read my commentary from last week (!) and ditched her go-to blue for red-hot Alexander McQueen. As I tweeted last night, redheads in red is one of my favorite fashion things EVER. This is a shining example of why.”
Ambika: +1. “Why does this McQueen gown want to hurt her torso? Why is it squeezing her breasts into oblivion? Why is the skirt of the gown rumpled? Why is that Harry Winston necklace not a great choice? So many questions. But I still think her face looks stunning and she’s pulling off the color.”
Maud: +4. “This is what I’ve been waiting for from Jessica. She looks beautiful. Redheads should ABSOLUTELY wear red.”
Sabrina: 0. “Sure, hoorah for the color and the bust. But boo to the terrible lack of proper tailoring in the waist and hips. Another couple of centimeters and it would have gone from squeezed and puckered to flattering. I can’t imagine how uncomfortable this was to sit in.”

Average score: 1.8

Kerri Washington
Breanne:+1. “Oh, Kerry. The hair, makeup and styling are yet again flawless, but there’s simply too much going on in this Rodarte dress. Sure, on paper, all that structure and all that lace could make for an interesting juxtaposition. But in real life? Not so much. Additionally, that long bodice made the 5-foot-4 actress appear unusually short.”
Nikki: +3. “Hurrah for Olivia Pope white! Kerry looks absolutely elegant in this Rodarte gown, right? Would you expect anything less?”
Ambika: 0. “This Rodarte gown does absolutely nothing for me. I don’t know why. I don’t like the structure and I don’t like the embellishment. I especially don’t like the embellishment at the hem. Sorry, Kerry!”
Maud: +4. “I love that Kerry wore Rodarte, and I LOVE the white and silver combo. Her hair isn’t driving me wild but everything else is great.”
Sabrina: +1. “I feel like this gown could easily be fixed. Tear off the lace and pluck out the rhinestones, and you’d have something much edgier and less like an arts and crafts project.”
