20 Years Later: Dazed And Confused By The Numbers

Party at the moon tower! Life was simpler back in 1976, when your biggest priority was acquiring Aerosmith tickets and your biggest concern was the impending paddling that might come from a power hungry rising senior. Richard Linklater‘s 1993 film Dazed and Confused chronicles less than 24 hours in a tiny Texas town, through the eyes of the various social stratospheres of the local high school. Despite consisting of a mostly unknown cast (including future Oscar winners) the film has become a cult classic, beloved by those who too believe that the best philosophy is just to keep L-I-V-I-N.

Today marks the 20th anniversary of Randall “Pink” Floyd and friends rejecting the proposed tyrannical structure their football coaches and high school administrators tried to put into place, in exchange for drinking warm beer from a keg, and, yes, getting high. To celebrate, take a look at how those most closely involved with the film have fared since its release.

1 Miley Cyrus film

Since first appearing in Dazed and Confused as Jodi Kramer, the older sister to Mitch who is the subject of the seniors’ hazing, Michelle Burke (pictured right) hasn’t done too much in the way of acting. She appeared in several made-for-TV movies and is the only cast member on the list to later work with Miley Cyrus in the unseen LOL.

2 reunions… so far

In addition to the upcoming reunion at the New York Film Festival, the cast of D&C has gotten together to celebrate twice before. In 2003, they reunited in Texas at the site of the famed “moon tower” where the epic last night of high school/first day of summer party took place. In March, Linklater and cast members Joey Lauren Adams, Anthony Rapp, and Nicky Katt appeared at a special 20th anniversary screening and discussion of the film, hosted by the Austin Film Society.

3 Oscar wins

Thanks to an uncredited appearance by Renee Zellweger, Dazed and Confused is responsible for giving two Oscar winners their start in film. Zellweger (Nesi White) went on to pick up three nominations and one win for Cold Mountain. Meanwhile, Ben Affleck (paddle-obsessed Fred O’Bannion) has earned two Oscars, one as a writer (Good Will Hunting) and another as a producer (Argo). Linklater has also picked up a nomination for his adaptation of Before Sunset.
