Love is in the air…or at least William Shakespeare‘s Romeo & Juliet is smack back in the middle of the zeitgeist. Orlando Bloom is currently starring opposite Condola Rashad in a new bi-racial Broadway production of the play and British cutie Douglas Booth will star will break teenaged girls’ hearts in the new film adaptation that opens this upcoming weekend.
So, what is it about Romeo & Juliet that keeps audiences coming back for more? Is it the tragic romance? Is it the beautiful blank verse? Or is it because Romeo is just so darn hot?
Even though he’s capricious and juvenile on the page, Romeo has become every woman’s ideal lover on stage, on screen and in pop culture. His name is synonymous with true love, desperate vows and young romance. So much so that Romeo has become more than a stage role; he’s an archetype.
We went through the past century and looked at all of the Romeo & Juliet film adaptations (some of them involving zombies, gnomes and martial arts), notable stage productions and we looked into the general cultural ether to find the top 20 hottest Romeos of all time.
