CBS has confirmed that Stephen Colbert will replace David Letterman as host of The Late Show in 2015 and we have to admit that it’s an amazing choice. Sure, it would have been incredible to see a hilarious woman or comic of color take the reins of CBS’s late night show, but we have to admit that Stephen Colbert is going to rule late night.
A good late night host needs to have mastered a very specific set of skills. He or she needs to be able to deliver sharp monologue jokes that lampoon politics or skewer the news. He or she needs to be a fantastic interviewer. Finally, a 21st century late night host needs to have their finger on the pulse. So much so that it’s not enough to have a sense of the nation’s zeitgeist; a modern late night host needs to define it.
We have no doubts that Stephen Colbert will fit in nicely with network late night. He’s a master of political satire, has insanely good interview skills and continues to churn out viral comedy and music sensations all the time. Do you remember his Daft Punk sketch? (Rather, how could you forget?)
We’re so confident that Colbert is the best man for the job that we kind of want it to be 2015 already.
