The film industry may be in a constant state of change, but the need for shirtless male actors has always withstood the test of time. And from Marlon Brando sweating it out in A Streetcar Named Desire to Chris Evans flexing some patriotic muscle in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, we, the audience, remain unfazed by handsome men who just so happen to take their tops off on screen.
Most of the time having a character go shirtless serves the plot: In The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Steve Carell‘s Andy Stitzer is popping his chest waxing cherry, Fight Club‘s Tyler Durden avoids mounting dry cleaning bills by fighting topless and Magic Mike is a film about male strippers. But sometimes, male toplessness is completely gratuitous — not that we’re complaining. Directors have artistic license, after all.
In honor of the release of Neighbors, where Zac Efron and Seth Rogen go head-to-head as shirtless Abercrombie and Fitch models and an entire fraternity refuses to wear sleeves 90 percent of the time, we’re taking a look at memorable male chests from the big screen. How well do you know the famous pectorals of Bruce Lee from Ryan Gosling? Check out some of the most iconic chests, above.
