Andrew Garfield Dresses In Drag, Dances Like No One’s Watching In Arcade Fire’s “We Exist” Video

|

After an extremely gratifying promotional run behind The Amazing Spider-Man 2, is there anything Andrew Garfield could do to hurt his public opinion? He’s a superhero by day, a rock star by night and one-half of the most adorable celebrity couple currently walking the Earth. Which means the chances are looking very slim.

To remain in your good graces, Garfield continues to deliver the unexpected. The actor stars in the Arcade Fire‘s new music video, “We Exist.” It’s a cut from 2013′s Reflektor that tells the story of a gay young man talking to his father about the world around him. The music video serves to illustrate that story with Garfield’s character dressing in drag and receiving a slew of mixed reactions from the inhabitants of his small town. “In dominant cultures there’s what’s normal, and everything else is abnormal. It’s one of the darker tendencies of humanity to think everyone should fit into a mold,” Win Butler told Time Out London last year. In the video we see him shave his head (which may explain his recent buzz cut), try on women’s clothing and wear a wig before heading to a local bar. Once there he gets roughed up by an unsavory group of customers, only to launch into an emotionally-charged dance that rivals the performance from Dance Moms‘ star Maddie Ziegler in Sia‘s “Chandelier.” Check it out above.

Garfield is the latest leading man to deliver a memorable performance in drag. From Jared Leto to Chiwetel Ejiofor, see more in the gallery below.
