Summer is finally here and that means the blockbuster season is underway. With the heat rising outside, movie studios are hoping fans will go inside to watch one of hundreds of films opening between now and August. While it’s too early to determine a winner of the summer blockbuster season, X-Men: Days of Future Past is making a strong showing with a $90 million opening weekend and a total gross of over $124 million so far in North America. But coming up are the new Transformers flick, How to Train Your Dragon 2 and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.
All of these films have potential to score big, especially when you look back on the past summer blockbuster season. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen raked in $402 million in 2009. Superheros in the form of Spidey (Spider-Man 3) and Bruce Wayne (The Dark Knight) topped the box office in 2007 and 2008, respectively. And fans love animated films, as Shrek 2 and Toy Story 3 proven in the past. Click through the gallery of past summer season’s biggest hits. You may be surprised what films topped the box office or realize that things are all too familiar. (We’ll call it the sequel syndrome.)
Among the most popular films of the past decade are superhero flicks. Everyone from Spider-Man to the Avengers have stormed theaters and wowed fans. And if there’s one thing fans love about those films, it’s the idea of having a super power. Watch as Kirsten Dunst and Tobey Maguire dream about what powers they wish they had. (Man, remember when Dunst was Mary Jane and Emma Stone was practically unheard of?)
