Tonight’s episode featured the song “The ’59 Sound†by The Gaslight Anthem. Their second album (also called “The ’59 Soundâ€) came out in late August, but the band continues to gain momentum after being named to some best of 2008 lists like Rolling Stone and NME . After being selected as the Best Week Ever theme song this week, an appearance on Letterman next Friday, and an upcoming European tour, perhaps all the band really has left to accomplish is to play a presidential inauguration concert like Springsteen.
The Gaslight Anthem sometimes gets classified as a “punk†band, but that can be misleading. These days, punk just does not have the same cache it did before Blink 182 made it all TRL friendly. Nowadays, the punk moniker conjures up images of either whiney emo kids singing about being alone or hardcore mohawked dudes rebelling against God knows what. The truth is there are cool bands out there like The Gaslight Anthem playing genuine, honest rock music (see also The Hold Steady).
