A lot of people are up in arms overJennifer Lawrence being cast as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games films, but one person who is completely thrilled with the pick is director Gary Ross. Ross has a lot to say to the detractors who claim that Lawrence is too old, too blonde, too whatever to play Katniss and in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Ross explains that after her audition, both he and Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins were convinced she was “absolutely the right person for the role,” he said. “It was the easiest casting decision I ever made in my life.”
“She came in and read for me and it just knocked me out. I don’t want to go into too many details, but we did a scene from the movie and it was so amazingly powerful that it was sort of stunning,” Ross said. “You glimpsed every aspect of the role and the potential of the whole movie.” Ross goes on to say that Collins was an integral part of the casting process as well. “Suzanne saw every single audition. And not only did Suzanne not have an issue with Jen’s age, she felt you need someone of a certain maturity and power to be Katniss. This is a girl who needs to incite a revolution. …To Suzanne, Jen is the perfect realization of the character who is in her head.” And as for her looks? “I promise all the avid fans of The Hunger Games that we can easily deal with Jennifer’s hair color.”
Ross also said that while plenty of people have read for the other roles in the film, who gets cast as Peeta and Gale will depend entirely on chemistry with Lawrence. Well, that makes predicting this sort of thing even harder.
You have to feel sorry for Chris Brown, because no matter what he does, he still doesn’t realize that he has to own up and take responsibility for his actions. When a nude photo of Brown leaked online the other day, it was unfortunate for Brown, but all our sympathy for him was lost when he blamed the girl he sent the photo to for posting it online. Brown admitted to radio station Hot 99.5 that he took the pic himself (that’s pretty obvious), but then blamed the “reckless” girl he sent the naked photo to for making it public.
“When I saw it I was like, ‘Oh, damn, I kinda did take that picture,’” Brown told DJ Toby Knapp. Knapp then asked what Brown’s mother would say about the situation, and Brown replied “She’ll probably just tell me to watch who I be sending the pictures to—if you gonna do that, don’t be sending them to no . . . Girls be reckless.” Yes, you just kinda took all your clothes off and you kinda took the picture and you kinda hit send, but it’s the “reckless” girl at fault. We’re not saying the girl is innocent (in fact, if you want to be all gross about it, the photo is sort of impressive, so maybe she was trying to put the good word out about Chris), but Chris needs to start owning up to his behavior.
We sort of figured that John Mayer‘s chances with the ladies were slim these days given his record as a bit of a dog who likes to blab about his conquests. That’s why we’re not really believing the rumor that Mayer is hooking up with Oscar-winner Kate Winslet, and we’re a little repulsed by the idea of it. Kate’s too classy for that, right? But Star Magazine reported that the two are secretly seeing each other, and the pairing makes no sense to us. “Kate Winslet is trying her best to keep her steamy new hookup under wraps,” Star reports. “But the newly single Oscar winner, 35, has been secretly spending time with notorious ladies’ man John Mayer, 33, Star has learned!”
We feel bad for Winslet, not just because of this rumor, but also because on the off-chance that it’s true, Jessica “Sexual Napalm” Simpson has got to be a tough act to follow.
There are few franchises that make us squee the way Harry Potter does. Twilight? Not really (sorry, Kate Spencer). The Hunger Games? We love it, but it still can’t hold a candle to the epic battle between The Boy Who Lived and He Who Must Not Be Named. So we’re thrilled and sad to watch this preview of Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part Two because while we’re really excited to see it, it’s the end of an era. The movie comes out on July 15, 2011, after which point, Ralph Fiennes will finally get his nose back.
ABC is rebooting Charlie’s Angels and the show has been shooting in Miami for the past two months. So how are the new Angels, Minka Kelly, Rachael Taylor, and Annie Ilonzeh, stacking up against their predecessors? Pretty well, we’d say. Given how many women have played one of Charlie’s Angels over the past thirty years, you’d think that all private investigators were supermodel-hot ladies in sexy clothes (or, you know, Tom Selleck). Check out a few more shots of the women on location in our gallery.
American Pie lovers (all both of yous) will be happy to hear the news that most of the film’s stars have signed on for one more sequel called American Reunion. It’s not that we hate the movie—we actually quite enjoyed it when it came out—but any goodwill toward the film was lost with each subsequent sequel (American Pie 2, American Wedding) and spinoff (American Pie Presents Band Camp, American Pie Presents The Naked Mile, American Pie Presents Beta House, American Pie Presents The Book Of Love) that came out of the franchise. But now, there will be (at least) one last hurrah.
American Reunion has signed every major actor from the film (though Alyson Hannigan is still a maybe) to reprise the roles they played in the 1999 film, with Jason Biggs, Eugene Levy, and Seann William Scott among them. If you weren’t really paying attention back then, this movie was a phenomenon, a must-see blockbuster that was unprecedented for its raunchiness, which explains the star-studded turnout at its premiere twelve years ago. We unearthed some amazing photos from that hot summer night in 1999 of some serious A-listers at the premiere and it made us wonder: Would these people be caught dead at the premiere for American Reunion? Probably not, but check out the gallery and see for yourself.
It’s one thing to ban song lyrics because it they’re offensive, but it’s another to ban something because it promotes tolerance and acceptance, which is what Malaysia is doing to Lady Gaga. Gaga’s song “Born This Way” features the lyrics “No matter gay, straight or bi, lesbian, transgendered life, I’m on the right track, baby,” which broadcasters in Malaysia have decided to garble on the air because the government there forbids “offensive content.” Yes, playing songs about accepting those people with a lifestyle different to your own is considered offensive and can be illegal in Malaysia. Hey, America, can the left and the right get on the same page for once and applaud the fact that, regardless of your stance on the issue, at least that doesn’t happen here?
AMP Radio Networks in Malaysia said in a statement that “The particular lyrics in ‘Born This Way’ may be considered as offensive when viewed against Malaysia’s social and religious observances, ” and that “The issue of being gay, lesbian or (bisexual) is still considered as a ‘taboo’ by general Malaysians,” hence the precautionary measure. Gay rights activists in the country criticized the move for “perpetuating ignorance and hate,” and we’re just waiting to see how Gaga herself responds. Given her pro-LGBT track record, she can’t be thrilled.
To be fair, we didn’t actually see Winter’s Bone, the film that landed Lawrence her Academy Award nomination, so we can’t pass judgment, but what do you guys think? he doesn’t look like Katniss, that’s for sure, but that’s what hair and makeup is for, right? And as for the other girls who were hoping for the part, we’re sure the roles of Prim, Johanna, and Foxface are still up for grabs.
Jonas also manages to win us over a little bit in his interview by proving he’s no teeny-bopper, he’s actually a pretty cool guy who seems like he’d be fun to hang out with. He shops at Trader Joe’s, hangs out with The Black Keys and Bono, and of course dates Ashley Greene, who he says “really puts my feelings first. She understands my busy schedule.” The 21-year-old also has a solo album coming out, but if all else fails, he’ll no doubt have a successful career as a model, amirite ladies?
