In a lot of ways, Amy Winehouse and Mark Ronson found themselves by finding each other. The man who produced Amy’s biggest hits referred to the songstress as his “musical soul-mate”. Like Lennon and McCartney, the two were never better than when they were together. Last night, at his first gig since the singer’s passing, Ronson paid tribute to his friend and collaborator by inviting her backing band onstage to perform several numbers. But this was far from a maudlin tribute, as the gang kicked things off with a particularly funky version of “Valerie”, the Zuton’s song Winehouse and Ronson famously covered in 2008.
“It’s been a s–t week and it’s great coming out to play to you guys,” he told those attending the Greenwich Summer Sessions show. “That’s the great thing about music. If you love Amy and her music make sure you clap your hands right now. I went to her service yesterday and a Rabbi said ‘A person’s life is measured in deeds, not years.’ Hers was pretty f—–g special.” He encouraged the crowd to join in and sing the fallen vocalists’ part, before going on to do versions of her other hits “Rehab” and “Back To Black”.
From the stage Ronson shared his final thoughts on his soul sister. “Amy Winehouse was a genius and has made more brilliant music than I’ll ever make.” Check out the touching (and rocking) version of “Valerie” in the video above. We never thought we could be so moved by a song that’s spent the greater part of three years being blared at an uncomfortable volume out our car windows for everyone to hear. And we bet that’s how Mark (and Amy) would have wanted it.
Just days after the news of her split with mega-creep Jesse James went public, Kat Von D stormed out of the Good Day L.A. studios after learning that host Jillian Reynolds planned to ask some questions about, you guessed it, her split with mega-creep Jesse James. Kat doesn’t seem to get how morning talk shows (or people in general) work. But now she’s back peddling and insisting to TMZ that the show’s anchors broke their word to not mention the split in her introduction.
Kat says she saw her Jesse James-centric intro on the teleprompter and “very politely” asked that it be changed, but nothing was done about it. So when she heard it live on air, she bolted. Good Day L.A. producers are calling BS, and insist that Kat made no such demands, only requesting the interviewers didn’t discuss former James flames Sandra Bullock and Michelle McGee (which they didn’t). Kat claims that she didn’t want her to highlight her personal life, but promote the new season of LA Ink. And what better way to promote a series than a massively public breakup and causing a fuss on live television. We’re just sayin…
In case you were wondering, Emma Stone is an excellent kisser. And tastes like cherries. We have this on good authority: her Crazy Stupid Love costar, Josh Groban. Yes, that Josh Groban. The record-busting classical crossover star has crossed over yet again, this time to comedy. Josh ditched his boy -next-door image to play Emma’s douchey boyfriend, and his first time on the big screen also brought with it his first kiss (on camera, that is). We really hope this was playing during it.
“After one of our scenes, the directors said, ‘This is feeling a little goofy. Let’s try this with a kiss at the end.’ ” the screen newbie told GQ, “And I thought, ‘Holy s—! I’ve never kissed on-camera before. What do I have to do? I didn’t take that class in college.’” But Emma the screen veteran was quick to put him at ease. “Emma’s just this total pro. She pulls out her lip gloss and says, ‘It’s cherry. That cool with you?’” It’s safe to say we’d be fine with that. Sadly, the smooch didn’t make the final cut, but Josh will never forget his celluloid milestone. “That kiss shall forever be my deer in Stand by Me. It’s my moment alone. No one but me will ever be able to treasure it.”
2010′s American Idol is going off the market, folks! Lee DeWyze has gotten engaged to model Jonna Walsh, he tells People Magazine. The champion chanteur popped the question while sharing glasses of champaign on a private yacht in Disney World during a fire works show. What the hell, we thought stuff like that only happened in Full House specials! He’s got a romantic edge, that Lee DeWyze.
“I’m excited!” he tells People. “Jonna is a Disney freak. They were playing love songs on the boat and I got down on my knee and asked her. I had a speech prepared but it all went out the window so I just asked her. She started crying and I said, ‘Is that a yes?’” We’ll say probably. The couple, who met on the video shoot for his single “Sweet Serendipity” last fall, have set a date for fall of 2012. Maybe they can get Lady Gaga to perform the wedding?
It looks like Lady Gaga wants to become Reverend Gaga, and it’s all in the name of equality. Momma Monster is no stranger to doing her part for LGBT rights, having actively petitioned against Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, and passionately crusading for same-sex partnerships. But now that New York state has legalized gay marriage, Gags is taking it one step further by wanting to become an ordained minister so she can perform these weddings herself!
“My yoga instructor Trisha, a lesbian, has lived with her partner for years now and they have a beautiful daughter,” Lady Gaga told the Daily Mirror. “They asked me to marry them. So, yes. I’m going to do it. It’s their private wedding but they’re very proud of it. They’ve waited a long time to legitimise their love.” It’s likely that she’ll get ordained in the Universal Life Church, which believes that all people have the right to be ministers, and grants the ordination in a matter of days. Gaga is all about results, after all. But what’s it gonna be like when the bride’s dress is outshone by priest’s dress?! The Gaga works in mysterious ways.
Go on and try to tear her down, but she keeps risin’ from the ground like a skyscraper! It’s been a roller-coaster year for Demi Lovato, as the teen queen battled with her very adult demons. But after a stint in rehab and some rejuvenating time off, Demi’s back and better than ever with a new lease on life and a kickass new track called “Skyscraper!” Although it’s only been out a little more than a week, it’s rose to the top of the iTunes charts (yes, like a skyscraper), making it her most successful song to date. To celebrate her triumphant comeback, join us as we run down the Disney dream’s 20 hottest looks. Enjoy!
It’s official: they’re off to see the Wizard, the wonderful Wizard of Oz! Disney announced that filming began on Tuesday for Oz: The Great And Powerful, the prequel to the 1939 classic. The tales of the casting are an epic in their own right, but it looks like director Sam Raimi has a dream team to populate the emerald city.
James Franco has the lead as the young Wizard, and fellow off-kilter-big-studio-indie-movie type Michelle Williams will star as Glinda, the Good Witch. Mila Kunis is gonna tear it up as Theodora, commonly known as “the Wicked Witch” but fans of the musical Wicked know she’s really not that bad. Rachel Weisz rounds out the main characters as Theordora’s sister, Evanora, and Zach Braff lends a supporting role as the Wizard’s assistant.
The CGI and technics extravaganza will trace the story of the Wizard, from his humble beginnings as a Kansas circus magician named Oscar Diggs, through his arrival in Oz and how he eventually earned the title of ‘The Great And Powerful’ Now that Harry Potter is all said and done, we think Hollywood is looking for a hot young Wizard to take his place. We bet Disney’s gonna follow the yellow brick road all the way to the bank with this one. To bad we have to wait until February, 2013.
It’s a boy! Selma Blair welcomed her first child into the world on Monday, her reps are telling People Magazine. She and husband, fashion designer Jason Bleick, named their 7 lb., 12 oz bundle Arthur Saint. The couple, who met working together on Bleick’s clothing line, announced that they were ‘expecting’ in January, but didn’t want to say whether it was a going to be a boy or girl. “I’m not going to say what it is yet,” she told People in March. “Hopefully, it’s one or the other. Who knows these days!”
Apparently she had a great pregnancy, full of love, excitement, a little nerves, and lots and lots of pancakes. “I eat pancakes all day long. I don’t eat gluten, so I eat gluten-free pancakes. It’s a little better, but not much!” she says. “I have a lot of pancake cravings, a lot of grapefruit [cravings].” Congrats to the happy family! Pancakes all around!
OK, we know the article of clothing known as “jeggings” has gotten some serious flack. It’s definitely a tough look to pull off. But we gotta say, jeggings don’t look half bad on Paz de la Huerta. Is it just us? The Boardwalk Empire star rocked the risky fashion choice at the premiere of The Devil’s Double in New York City on Monday. Paz went into pin-up mode as she hit the red carpet, proving that she has what it takes to enter the cele-booty pantheon along with Kim Kardashian and J-Lo. We never thought we’d say this, but check the gallery below for more of the hottie in the jeggings!
After a fairy tale year of romance, tattoos and being “connected on a whole different level,” America’s bad boy/bad girl couple Kat Von D and Jesse James are calling it quits. The couple got together last summer in the aftermath of Jesse’s catastrophic end to his marriage with Sandra Bullock, and were engaged to be married in January. The stated reason for the break-up is that Jesse’s home in Texas is too far away from Kat’s tattoo shop in LA.
“The distance between us was just too much,” James told People Magazine. “I’m so sad because I really love her.” We’d think this could have been sorted out before getting engaged. Silly us.
As for Kat’s response, she took to her Twitter: “I am no longer w Jesse and out of respect for him, his family and myself, that’s all the info I’d like to share. Thanks for respecting that.” And just like that, America’s scariest couple is no more.
