Throughout her career Jill Scott has rocked as many hairstyles as she has shows. Like her vibrant personality, her hair choices are fun, edgy and unique. In preparation for tonight’s season premiere of VH1 Storytellers featuring Jill Scott, we chatted with celebrity hairstylist Ursula Stephen about the styles she loves most on Jill. If the name Ursula Stephen rings a bell it’s probably because she is the woman solely responsible for Rihanna’s 2008 haircut that turned her into a style icon. She’s also the same stylist on whom Rihanna spent $24,000 to fly out to London to fix a hair emergency this March. Yes, guys, a woman’s hair is that big of a deal. Stephen says she admires Jill for her beauty and confidence. “She shows the girls how to be beautiful with natural hair,” said Stephen. “She’s definitely one of the natural hair icons.”
Gosh, 2001 seems like eons ago, but it was around this time Scott took the music industry by storm due to her first album Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1. At the 2001 Billboard Music Awards, Jill wore a head of full ‘locks in the shape of a crown. Sorry, folks. This isn’t a do it yourself style. Stephen said the best way to achieve this look is through a professional braider.

At the Grammy Jam Fest in 2004, Jill confidently sported an afro with a little variation by changing the shape. To achieve this look, Stephen said Motions Hydrate My Curls adds moisture and defines curls. “The best way to make sure your afro is even is by using an afro pic,” Stephen said. Read more…
Let’s not pretend we didn’t see Kanye West’s appearance on Keeping Up With The Kardashians coming. The new promo video shows Kanye West and Kim Kardashian smiling in each others’ faces right after Khloe says, “Kanye and Kim, they’re kind of like two peas in a pod.” Of course Kimye wasn’t going to let the opportunity pass to flaunt her new boo on her show. Forget about her “guarded heart” that she wants to keep out of the spotlight. Ratings rule everything!
But don’t get too excited about seeing the intricate details of her relationship with Yeezy. In an interview with E! Online she said, “If we are having dinner and he does show up, I’m sure we’re not going to go, ‘Stop the cameras!'” But, yes, there’s a “but,” “I’m not going to be taking a bubble bath and drinking champagne or on a sex swing [on camera] like Khloé [Kardashian Odom] and Lamar [Odom] do,” she said. Imagine Kimmy Cakes sitting on Kanye in a sex swing! From the looks of the promo Kourtney is having a baby girl and still fighting with Scott, Khloe’s still the outcast of the family, but happily married to Lamar Odom and Kim is, well, in love. Again. After six seasons I think we all know play by play what will happen. That won’t keep us from tuning in to see if Kimye steal a kiss, or end up in a swing.
Twitter is the new press release. Tia Mowry confirmed via Twitter that she would not be returning to BET’s The Game for its sixth season. Her abrupt Twitpress (Twitter + press release) followed the buzzing rumors that the bubbly twin who plays Melanie Davis, the non-practicing doctor, on BET’s highest rated show, was actually fired. HipHollywood.com first reported the news, which they attributed to a “well placed source.” Hoping to quiet the chatter, Med School (we can’t help but call her that after all these years) tweeted, “Just wanted to let all my fans know that I will not be returning to The Game for season 6. It was an incredible run and I had lots of fun along the way. I am looking forward to my upcoming projects…the release of my book #OhBaby [today!], season 2 of @TiaTameraShow on @mystyle premiering in June, and my @ABCFamily movie coming out in December…more to come! love u so much.” Read more…
Poor Rihanna. Putting out an album every year seems like it’s taking a toll on the singer’s health. Entertainment Tonight reports she was rushed to a New York City hospital after her fabulous attendance at the Met Gala Monday night. One of her followers asked her why she had been quiet all day when Rihanna replied by tweeting a photo of an IV in her arm. She didn’t give a reason why she was in the hospital, but according to Entertainment Tonight a source tells them she “had a fever and flu since last week and needed an IV but is fine now.” Read more…
Terrell Owens holds many NFL records for being one of the best wide receivers in the league. But his football talents aren’t what made him a trending a topic on Twitter today. T.O. appeared on Dr. Philthis afternoon to address the deadbeat dad accusation that has hung over his head since the T.O. Show aired. NBC Sports reports that Owens opened up about making $80 million in his 15-year career, but has squandered nearly all of it. Lawdhavemercy. $80 million just gone. Read more…
Who would’ve thought it takes Carmelo Anthony longer to get ready than his always well-put-together wife La La? These two, blowing up stereotypes all over the place. One of the cutest basketball couples ever stopped by the annual Met Costume Gala last night looking amazing in blue and black. La La’s custom-made Zac Posen gown was the perfect royal blue, and it accentuated her curves in all the right places. Carmelo was spiffy in his black Rag & Bone tux, paired with wide frame hipster glasses.
When VH1 News asked who took the longest, La La revealed, “He always takes longer than I do, absolutely,” she said. “When it comes to getting dressed, he is so slow.”
What takes the NY Knick so long? “I don’t know. I procrastinate,” he said. “I got to play the music, I got to take my time. I don’t like to be rushed.” Read more…
Tell us how you really feel! Samuel L. Jackson says what the hell he wants, usually with a few expletives for good measure. So why would anyone expect him to bite his tongue about what he feels was a bad review of his new film The Avengers by New York Times writer A.O. Scott? Negating any good he held for the publication after The New York Times Magazine did a cover story on Jackson last weekend, Scott’s take on The Avengers did not please him, and he felt the writer (and the world) should know.
The review, which praises the movie’s comic bits cast but points out flaws like its “grinding, hectic emptiness” and “bloated cynicism,” prompted Jackson to tweet, “#Avengers fans,NY Times critic AO Scott needs a new job! Let’s help him find one! One he can ACTUALLY do!”
And in response to someone asking if people are entitled to their own opinion, Jackson struck back, “That is My Opinion! @TheFilmNest & what’s irrational about it? They aren’t going to fire his jaundiced ass & You & I Know It!”
In a Twitter conversation with New Yorker music critic Alex Ross, Scott expressed his reaction to Jackson’s outburst, “thanks @alexrossmusic and yet I have to say I feel more flattered than threatened. which may prove the point a different way.”
Twitter wars are never the way to settle a beef, gentleman. Although we secretly wished Jackson would have turned into Mitch from The Long Kiss Goodnight, these guys should take notes from President Obama. The only way to settle this once and for all is for the two of them to join Obama at the White House for a good old fashioned beer.
We already gave you a preview of Bobby Brown’s interview with Today’s Matt Lauer, in which the singer attempts to clear his name by dispelling the age-old rumors that he was the cause of Whitney Houston’s addiction. Now we have video of the sitdown, and it’s, of course, even more heartbreaking. In addition to recounting how well she looked the week prior to her death, he tells Lauer that he still asks himself if he could have helped her more.
“Maybe I could have done something different. You know?” he says. “To ensure she had a longer life. But you have to want it.”
Although happily engaged, he had no qualms expressing the love he had for his ex-wife of 14 years. Brown’s perception is that the couple had a great and “beautiful” relationship. “I can honestly say that I loved that woman with everything that I am,” he admitted. “I truly and genuinely love that woman. And I still love her to this day.” He said it’s no secret (not even to his fiancee) how he felt about Whitney. “I was in love with her deeply,” he says of his late ex.
It’s commendable for Brown to take the high road by only having good things to say about Houston. From the outside looking in the couple may have appeared to be a little rough around the edges. But that’s not to say the love they had for each other wasn’t real. Take a look at the couple during the happier times of their marriage.
If there’s one thing we absolutely know about Rihanna, it’s that she doesn’t give a hoot what anyone thinks of her living her life to the fullest. In typical badass Riri form, the pop singer shows off how she relieves stress, posting two Instagram pictures of herself enjoying the “best stress reliever,” which in this glam girl’s world means making it rain on scantily clad dressed strippers. Mocking critics who have condemned her for not behaving like a role model she added the hashtags to the picture of an unknown stripper backing it up on her: “#RoleModelS— #NaviS—.” Read more…
Sometime bad boy Bobby Brown is hurt by the accusations that he led Whitney Houston down the wayward path of drug use. Brown sat down with Today’sMatt Lauer for his first interview since Whitney’s death, airing in two parts beginning on Wednesday (April 2). For seven years, Brown says he has been clean of any narcotics (good for you, B!), and he hoped his ex-wife of 15 years was on a similar path of sobriety. He tells Lauer that when he saw his Houston a week before she passed, “[She] had this glow about her that was just, you know, incredible. I’m saying to myself, you know, ‘She must be … she must be doing really well,’ because she looked really well,” reports TodayEntertainment. When the 43-year-old R&B singer was asked about how he feels about all the people who blame him for Houston’s addiction, he said, “It makes me feel terrible. But you know, I know differently. I think if anyone ever knew us, if anybody ever spent time around us instead of time lookin’ through the bubble, they would know how we felt about each other. They would know how happy we were together.”
Fortunately for the pair, their wake-up call came after viewing their disastrous short-lived reality show Being Bobby Brown. In Houston’s 2009 interview with Oprah, Houston alluded to only doing the show for her then-husband, so he could have something of his own. Following in the shadows of The Voice was no easy feat. According to Brown, after the couple finally saw the show, they realized how detrimental the drugs were to their relationship. “We looked at the bubble and saw ourselves. We was able to see what other people were saying about us, you know? We was able to see that our drug use had affected our relationship, had affected the love that we felt for each other.” Read more…
