NBC is promoting season five of Celebrity Apprentice as the “toughest season yet,” and we can kind of see why. I mean, who would want to mess with the likes of George Takei, Clay Aiken and Debbie/Deborah Gibson?
Oh, wait, there are also a couple of intimidating folks here: Victoria Gotti, Real Housewives of New Jersey’s Teresa Giudice and American Chopper’s Paul Teutul Sr. Not only do they know their way around reality TV, but they also probably know a guy. And Lou Ferrigno may not be the Hulk anymore, but we wouldn’t test him. Also, former Miss Universe Dayana Mendoza was once kidnapped in Venezuela, so running a business or five should be a piece of cake, right?
Also competing for the chance to win back their fame, er, win $250,000 for the charity of their choice are a slew of “Where have they been?” folks: Aubrey O’Day, Arsenio Hall, Tia Carrere, Adam Carolla and Cheryl Tiegs. Magician Penn Jillette, racecar driver Michael Andretti, actress Patricia Velasquez comedian Lisa Lampanelli and the always-entertaining rocker Dee Snyder round out the cast.
“It’s amazing the abuse they take and the kind of work they put in,” Donald Trump told The Hollywood Reporter. Well, that remains to be seen, Donald. I mean, what counts as “amazing” for reality TV these days?

First, the slightly scary news: Nick Cannon is in an Aspen, Colorado, hospital recovering from “mild kidney failure,” according to a tweet from Mariah Carey. Even though she called it mild, and he seems alert enough in the photo above, Mariah also said that “this is very painful” in a blog post she wrote later. Also, we looked this up on WebMD, and found only entries for “acute kidney failure” and “chronic kidney failure,” neither of which sounded like much fun. Acute failure is caused by a drop in flow to blood from the kidneys; damage from medicines, poisons or infections; or something like kidney stones, a tumor or enlarged prostate blocking urine from flowing out of the kidneys. Ow.
But we’re going to follow MC’s example and focus on the positive, like how sweet they look together, even in the hospital. As she said in her blog, “We’re doing OK but we’re ‘straaaaaanded in Aspen.’ #DramaticDivaPlace (I know, we could be in a lot worse places) but the truth is as long as we’re together, we’re OK.”
Get well soon, Nick. Dembabies miss you!
A couple of weeks ago, sources in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, started spreading the rumor that Justin Timberlake had proposed to on-again girlfriend Jessica Biel while on a snowboarding trip. But if it’s true, we’ve heard nothing official since then. Maybe they didn’t want to get buried by all those other holiday love stories? But today, Us Weekly is hyping its new issue by citing “several insiders” who say the story is true.
“Justin knows how much she loves snowboarding and the mountains, so it was the perfect place,” one source reportedly told the magazine. Still, this brings us nowhere closer to an actual confirmation of the potentially happy news.
The story first came up when Tayloe Piggott, a jewelry store in the resort town, initially posted a note about it on Facebook, but they quickly denied any first-hand knowledge of the event, writing, “Again – our most sincere apologies to Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel. We cannot believe where this rumor, which started out as (seemingly innocent) news that had been circulating in Jackson Hole, has been blown into a massive gossip event. We hope that Justin and Jessica enjoyed their visit to our town and are so sorry that it has ended up with this fiasco.”
So, we know two facts: Jessica likes snowboarding. And the pair were in Jackson Hole. That’s something, we guess.

We don’t like spreading vicious rumors here at TheFABlife. We don’t even enjoy reporting on good ones, if they don’t seem very true. But what we do like is imagining hypothetical maybe stories that would be very nice if they were true. Or something like that. Anyway, that’s what we’re doing as we figure out how to put a happy spin on the Russell Brand/Katy Perry split.
First, as background, the sad rumors: The U.K. Sunday Mirror reported that “insiders” said that the couple’s marriage has been on the rocks for a while and they’d even been in counseling because Brand, 36, wanted to leave his partying days behind him to settle down and start a family. But Perry, 27, didn’t want to be a housewife, the paper said. Also, they had mutually agreed to the divorce, but according to TMZ, Katy wanted Russell to file because her evangelical parents don’t believe in divorce (we’re pretty sure this technicality doesn’t get you off the hook, KP). One more sad thing, Russell was seen by himself at the Savoy hotel in London, and when someone at the gym told him happy New Year, he said, “Here’s hoping it gets happier.”
Oof. Now for happier rumors: Katy was able to have an upbeat New Year’s Eve, as people told the New York Post that she was partying it up in a private room at SoHo House in West Hollywood “One wouldn’t have ever even known that her husband had just filed for divorce,” a source told the paper.
While Russell Brand and Katy Perry’s split on Friday put a damper on our celebratory mood over the weekend, we are happy to report that other famous couples are doing their best to renew our faith in romance. Here’s a little round-up of all the happy relationship news that happened over the weekend:
Johnny Weir and his lawyer boyfriend Victor Voronov got married. The figure skater tweeted, “I’m married!” on Saturday morning, and later told Real Housewives of New York vet Jill Zarin that they’d have a wedding this summer.
American Idol finalist James Durbin married his longtime girlfriend, Heidi Lowe, on Saturday in Santa Cruz. Their 2-year-old son, Hunter, was the ring bearer, and 85 guests attended the festivities, People reports.
While we gossip bloggers of the world are still breathing a sigh of relief that Babyonce didn’t arrive during our holiday weekend, we can’t help but stir up new baby-bump watches for 2012. Well, one watch, another “avert your eyes.” First up, the watch is for Fergie and hubby Josh Duhamel, who have been married for three years and together for eight. Asked during the New Year’s Eve party at 1 OAK in Las Vegas whether she’d be starting a family this year, she told People, “Maybe, who knows? We’ll see.”
(For the record, this may also mean “No.” As a woman who’s been married and happily childless for a long time, I would like to say that “maybe” is an answer I often give when I want the questioner to back the F off but don’t want to be as rude as they are for asking.)
And speaking of which, LeAnn Rimes really doesn’t want you speculating on her reproductive abilities and desires. The country star has been married to Eddie Cibrian since April, and thus a stepmother to his two boys. But as for her own kids, after one Twitter fan asked when she’d get her own baby bump and another speculated that she couldn’t have one, she fired back, “I have never even tried so please stop discussing my ovaries LOL.”
OK, sorry we don’t mean to make this all about us, but we’re really sad to see this rumor confirmed: Russell Brand and Katy Perry are splitting after just over a year of marriage. Brand filed for divorce in Los Angeles today, and told People in a statement: “Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage. I’ll always adore her and I know we’ll remain friends.”
Perry and Brand had been spotted without their wedding rings as they celebrated the holidays apart this week, her on the beach in Hawaii and him in a pub in Coverack, Cornwall, England. A source said they had a “massive fight” before going their separate ways. And while everyone immediately said they’d be splitting up, we held out a tiny bit of hope that it was all nothing and they’d continue being one of the cutest couples of 2011, not one of the year’s shocking breakups. They really did seem like a sweetly odd pairing — him the very English reformed addict, her the California preacher’s daughter — and since they first started dating in 2009, they both kind of rose in our opinions. And there we go again, making this all about us, and how we’ll be ringing in 2012 with a little less of a belief in true celebrity love. Sigh.

Happy New Year, Fablifers! As we wrap up our Best of 2011 lists, we wondered what our future selves will think about the past year’s big trends. In fashion, there were a whole lot of animal prints, mismatched ’90s-reminiscent patterns, super-high heels, super-low-cut gowns, see-through gowns, missing pants, giant fur vests and a whole lot of geriatric-looking outfits. All sorts of ladies died their hair pink or applied Steven Tyler-ish feathers to their locks. Men continued to wear mustaches and beards. On the Internet, TMI Twitpics went to a whole new level (thanks, Anthony Weiner). On TV and in movies, nostalgia reigned, while in books, it was all about fear for the future.
We asked some prominent tastemakers which 2011 trends they think we’ll regret someday soon and got a surprisingly diverse response.
“Planking!” Questlove declared. “I don’t get it.”
Since we listed our 25 favorite vampires of 2011 last week and asked you to vote for your own, the polls have been HOT. Edward and Damon are neck and neck, but Bones is coming up from behind, as book fans seem to have caught onto the race. It’s exciting to watch on our end (Vampire Academy fans from Russia are a force to be reckoned with!), so we decided to leave polls open until 11 p.m. on New Year’s Eve. In the meantime, let’s look back at who this unusual collection of celebrities would name Vampire of the Year for 2011.
“Anyone from True Blood. They’re all brilliant and fabulous,” Heather Matarazzo told us. And her sentiments were echoed by True Blood werewolf Joe Manganiello: “It would probably be a tie between Stephen Moyer and Alex Skarsgard. I really can’t pick one or the other.”
Alexander Skarsgard’s dad obviously is a big Eric Northman fan as well. “It’s my vampire genes!” Stellan Skarsgard told us.
“Bella Swan!” Elizabeth Reaser said, choosing her on-screen daughter-in-law over her own adoptive “children.”
David Cook went old school, ignoring the “of 2011″ part of the title and choosing Brad Pitt’s Louis de Ponte du Lac from Interview With a Vampire.
Then there were the even less-obvious choices. Questlove nominated Count Chocula. “Hands down, he’s been vampire of the year for me for the last couple of decades.”
A day after we learned that Alessandra Ambrosio is doing her part to make the human race more beautiful comes more good news for the gene pool. Another Victoria’s Secret model, Lily Aldridge, and her husband, Kings of Leon frontman Caleb Followill, are expecting their first child, according to E! Online. The couple, who met at Coachella in 2007, got married in May. Aldridge, 26, is reportedly three months pregnant. And yes, that means that she was eating for two when she walked the runway wearing this:
