It’s kind of bizarre to consider that just twenty years ago, the reality television genre was just a voyeuristic curiosity (really it was just one series, MTV’s The Real World). These days, “unscripted” programming rules airwaves. And as much as you whine about its trashy brainlessness, you know you love it — and you’ve turned its stars into bonafide celebs with real Hollywood power. Read more…
UPDATE (2/24/13 at 11:48 p.m.): Good news! Jennifer Lawrence did NOT lose, after all; she took home the Academy Award for Best Actress tonight for her awesome performing in Silver Linings Playbook. She did, however, trip on her way up the steps to accept the award. Yet another reason —our Sixth, in fact!— to love and root for our girl, J-LAW!
Jennifer Lawrence may be slowly slipping into second place behind Emmanuelle Riva in the Best Actress Oscar race, but she remains solidly on-top in our books for reasons that go far beyond her amazing work on-screen. Despite all the hoopla surrounding her, from the indie accolades to the blockbuster bank, she is decidedly unfazed by it all. She doesn’t pal around with other celebs in her down time and she has yet to succumb to the unrelenting and unrealistic pressure of the Hollywood Actresses Must B Skin n’ Bones machine. She likes her mom. She is…normal. And that, more than anything, is the most extraordinary thing about her.
Ain’t nobody smoother than Denzel Washington! The 58-year-old actor and two-time Academy Award winner is making his umpteenth (we counted!) trip to the Oscars this weekend, where he’s nominated for Best Actor for his harrowing work in Flight. What better time, we thought, to take a look at Denzel’s dapper duds over the years?
Beyoncé‘s new HBO documentary, Life Is But A Dream, is set to premiere on HBO this Saturday night. While we have already canceled all of our plans that night in anticipation of spending the evening on the couch soaking in the experience, Bey unveiled the film at New York City’s historic Ziegfield Theater last night for her most fabulous and well-to-do friends, including dapper husband Jay-Z, pantsless sis Solange, and Her Royal Highness, Queen Oprah Winfrey, among others.
Bradley Cooper is enormously tall, handsome and confident, with an Oscar nomination under his belt and the man hair version of Kim Kardashian’s butt (that is to say: ridiculously, comically huge). It seems he might just be super-human! And yet – all we needed to see were these photos of him dancing with actress Alice Eve at a BAFTAs after-party to knock him back down to regular guy status, like a werewolf when the moon disappears.
In the pics, which you can see in the gallery below, Bradley looks like every other dude-brah who’s ever danced too hard to “Hey Ya” at a wedding with a bridesmaid he just met – sweaty and flushed while attempting to flirt awkwardly. Is it possible this new vision of BCoops makes him even more charming?
This Life & Style headline about Rihanna being the real reason behind Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez’s breakup made us chuckle … at first. We really have a hard time believing that RiRi and Justin were seeing each other as far back as 2010 — when the Biebs looked practically prepubescent (no offense) — as L&S claims. (It’s much more believable now, though; have you seen these abs?)
We’ll be honest, when we came up with the idea for this awards season Style Points race, we were envisioning a graph with much smoother lines. But now we realize that wouldn’t be as much fun as the crazy ups and downs Anne Hathaway, Jennifer Lawrence, Eddie Redmayne, Amanda Seyfried, Bradley Cooper, Jessica Chastain and Kerry Washington have delivered, in the eyes of our esteemed fashion panel. (Emma Stone has been a no-show lately; we may just drop her from the list!) This week, Yahoo! Entertainment New York bureau chief Breanne Heldman, Glamour’s online style editor Nikki Ogunnaike, and our own Ambika Muttoo and Sabrina Rojas Weiss evaluated the contestants’ Oscar nominee luncheon outfits (or, in the case of the non-nominees, outfits worn to other important events last week) and fell in love with Les Miz’s Redmayne all over again.
The thing to to remember about the Academy Awards Nominations Luncheon is that it is a lunch, not an awards show. That compounded with the fact that it’s held in the afternoon should suffice to make it an elegant, low-key event, fashion-wise, right? Well, we’re not quite sure. This is still Hollywood. We’d like a tad more ritz to our “low-key” please. The luncheon took place yesterday at the Beverly Hilton, and the red carpet was a bit snooze-worthy. We’ll start with the floral brigade, where, surprisingly, Jessica Chastain fared far better than our style favorite, Amy Adams. Amy’s J. Mendel Spring 2013 collection long-sleeve, below-the-knee, chiffon frock totally swamped her. Even though the various purples of the dress were stunning, and it features a cut-out back, front the front, it ended up making her look mumsy. The fact that she wore block-like, nude Casadei platform pumps did not help her case.
Jessica picked a larger, more vibrant print with her navy Erdem Pre-Fall 2013 sheath. She also wore nude heels, but hers were pointed Loboutin pumps, which although not ideal, were better than Amy’s. Moving on to the lighter shades, Helen Hunt‘s ruched pewter Dolce & Gabbana totally showed off her amazing figure. Sadly, the curse of the nude heel struck again, and this time it was a pair of chunky, strappy Jimmy Choos. What was even more sad was Jennifer Lawrence‘s white Chloe Spring 2013 dress, which did absolutely nothing for her. Shin-length and weirdly draped at the bodice, and paired with a ploddy black Casadei pumps, J.Law gave gorgeous face, but the rest of her her was baffling.
We’ll end with the good stuff. The two black looks of the afternoon were worn by beauties Anne Hathaway and Naomi Watts. Anne’s was a safe, yet elegant sleeveless sheath by The Row. We love that she lightened the look up with open-toe sandals and that pop of pink lippie, not to mention her lovely Jennifer Meyer bracelets and rings. We also loved Naomi’s textured black Valentino frock, especially with the Christian Louboutin Paulina pumps she chose to wear the appropriate, yet slightly whimsical outfit with. As we were fanning ourselves while watching Nicholas Hoult play a weirdly hot zombie in Warm Bodies, we had to come to terms with the fact that this strapping young actor was the adorable young-un who helped Hugh Grant get the girl in About a Boy 10 years ago. Wow, we thought, what a pleasant surprise to see these cute child stars make good … and yummy. But really, we shouldn’t be that surprised. As we started combing back through the boy stars of the early 2000s, we discovered a nice number of them had made this transition quite nicely. From big movie names like Daniel Radcliffe and Bow Wow to TV stars like Shia LaBeouf and Zac Efron, these kids are making good — and are now totally legal and not at all creepy to stare at. Enjoy 15 of them in the gallery below:

As pop stars go, Beyonce isn’t a wild experimenter in the hair department: She likes her hair long and pretty and somewhere between a natural brown and a honey blond — nothing shaved, spiked or dyed pink. But as we looked back at photos from her early Destiny’s Child years through today, we did notice quite a bit of subtle variety in her style. We also noticed that whether she’s going for curls or cornrows, flowing waves or sleek updos, Bey’s hair always looks good. (The same couldn’t always be said about her fashion, but that’s another post.) Which is your favorite? And which do you think she’ll rock on Sunday, when she performs at the Super Bowl Halftime Show?
