Kathy Griffin Makeover: Fab Or Fail?

Working with statuesque Brooke Shields every day would surely make anyone feel that their physical appearance had room for improvement, to say the least. Kathy Griffin starred opposite Brooke in the 90s hit comedy Suddenly Susan as her co-worker Vicky, who constantly complained that Brooke’s character could get anything simply because of her stunning looks. Perhaps Kathy believed her character’s M.O.: she underwent a laundry list of plastic surgery procedures to drastically change nearly every part of her body.

“I had lipo from my waist down — my stomach, thighs and the inside of my knees. The idea was to look like Jennifer Aniston. It didn’t work out at all. When I woke up I was not able to pee. I got toxicity and had to go to the emergency room and wear a catheter for a week. It was life-threatening, and the results were nonexistent,” she told Redbook of her first horrifying liposuction experience. The drama didn’t stop Kathy, however. She continued on her plastic surgery parade: changing her arms, legs, teeth, hair, lips, and nose, and emerging as the sleek star of her own hit reality show, Life On the D List.

Lil’ Kim Makeover: Fab Or Fail?

Kimberly Denise Jones was a curvy girl with a button nose, a big voice, and big dreams when rapper Notorious B.I.G. snapped her up from Brooklyn’s Bed-Stuy neighborhood and put her on stage with Junior M.A.F.I.A. But Lil’ Kim always sought approval from men, and her abusive relationships led her to making plastic surgery a habit. Her first nose job was reportedly more functional than cosmetic, after a violent boyfriend busted her nose. She told The Source,I’ve had the black eye, bloody lips, busted nose. I came out of the hospital from getting my nose done and he broke my [bleep] again.” Puffy, before he underwent his makeover and became Diddy, discouraged Kim from getting a breast lift, but later praised the results of her surgery. “Damn, you look good,” he told her.

Many plastic surgeries and more than a few revealing outfits later (remember those tassles?), Kim stepped out from under the shadow of B.I.G. and Puffy and went on to a solo career — headlining the colorful “Lady Marmalade” video with Christina Aguilera, Mya, and Pink. This year, after a stint in the slammer, she competed on Dancing With the Stars. Has her makeover been fab or fail?

Kelly Osbourne Makeover: Fab Or Fail?

Kelly Osbourne was a plump party girl when she busted out on the scene on her family’s reality show, The Osbournes. Kelly then shed thirty pounds by cutting back on soda, eating fresh food, and trying to have a positive frame of mind. “I find that when I get depressed, that’s when I gain it all back. But as soon as I start working and I’m productive and I feel good about myself, the weight just goes,” she said.

After a couple of stints in rehab for painkillers, Kelly reportedly has shed her drug habit for good. “I knew if I didn’t get help, I would die. I’m getting a second chance at my career and I want to be present for it.” A clean and sober Kelly started dressing in more sophisticated outfits, gracing the carpet in haute couture instead of falling out of clubs in the wee hours of the morning wearing ripped T-shirts. Kelly appears to have matured from rebellious teenager to sophisticated adult, complete with an engagement to fiancé Luke Worrall.

Marilyn Manson Makeover: Fab Or Fail?

In the ’80s, Marilyn Manson was Brian Warner, a nerdy journalism student from Ohio. But after meeting industrial music icons like Trent Reznor and My Life With Thrill Kill Kult, Warner created a new, more aggressive identity — and an iconic look to match. By the mid-nineties, he’d turned pasty and pale into a grotesque virtue. The lipstick and contact lenses probably helped.

The Antichrist Superstar — helped by such beauties as Rose McGowan, Dita Von Teese and Evan Rachel Wood — has taken a turn for the glamorous in the last decade, spending more time in designer sunglasses and stylish threads than filth-encrusted thongs. Do you miss the dirt (or the dork)?

Beyonce Makeover: Fab Or Fail?

A girl from Houston with a big voice and big dreams, Beyonce Knowles formed the girl group Destiny’s Child with friends Kelly Rowlands and Michelle Williams. She gladly belted out hits while wearing jeans and crop tops, with her bandmates always by her side. But in 2003, Beyonce busted out on her own with her solo album Dangerously in Love and a role in the Pink Panther. She lost her Destiny’s Child bandmates, but picked up future hubby Jay-Z on her arm. Beyonce stood on her own and transitioned into a headlining glamazon, frequently sporting haute couture and mingling with everyone from movie stars to political figures. Beyonce became a full on A-list celebrity on her own.

Ricki Lake Makeover: Fab Or Fail?

Actress and documentary film maker Ricki Lake has long struggled with her weight. She started her career in the John Waters‘ flick Hairspray, at the time calling herself “big, blonde and beautiful,” but later admitted to crash dieting during this time. In 1993, the star landed her own talk show, which erupted into an unexpectedly huge hit. But behind the success, Ricki was struggling to get her weight under control.  In 1994 she lost more than 100 pounds, but her method was unhealthy. “I was starving myself. I was fainting,” she later said.

At her heaviest, the star weighed in at 260 pounds and was a size 24. But in 2006-2007, Ricki began eating meals delivered from “Fresh Dining” and she “went from a 12-14 to a size 6.” These days, she’s as sexy as ever and loving her look. “For the longest time, when I was very heavy, I couldn’t cross my legs,” she told US Weekly in 2007. “I couldn’t physically do it. LOVE that I can cross my legs now.”

Carrie Underwood Makeover: Fab Or Fail?

Carrie Underwood entered the fourth season of American Idol as a 21-year-old country girl from Oklahoma who favored T-shirts, jeans and no makeup and listed her hero as “mommy” on her Idol application. Carrie lived on a farm, far from the glitz and glamour of Los Angeles and pleaded in a country drawl on her Idol audition video, “I wanna go to Hollywood really bad.” After Carrie won the season, she released the best-selling female country debut album of all time, graced numerous red carpets in fabulous gowns, and dated some of Hollywood’s hottest eligible bachelors (Chace Crawford, Tony Romo and current hockey player beau Mike Fisher).

Carrie became educated on designer labels and chucked her overalls. “I’ll go home and one of my friends will say, ‘Oh my, gosh, those shoes are so cute.’ And I’ll say, ‘Oh, they’re Christian Loubotin’s.’ They’re like, ‘What?’ she told Glamour. She also started stocking up at Sephora. “I have a giant makeup case, more makeup than any girl should have in her lifetime,” she admits. Carrie also shed her country girl pounds by doing cardio workouts and keeping a diary of everything she eats. In just a few years Carrie morphed from goofy farm girl to sophisticated fashionista.

Axl Rose Makeover: Fab Or Fail?

Axl Rose was once the biggest of the big-hair bad-asses, whether pulling that it under a bandana in Guns N’ Roses’ “Paradise City” or hairspraying it to the heavens in “Welcome To The Jungle.” And then, just when we were getting used to the guy, he disappeared for a decade.

When the GNR singer returned to the limelight in 2003, he was still rocking sports jerseys and shrieking across the stage. Only now his long hair was knotted into golden braids, making him look not unlike a post-op Predator. Should he keep the knots or change it back before the band’s (knock on wood) upcoming tour?

Oprah Winfrey Makeover: Fab Or Fail?

If there’s anyone who loves to talk about her weight issues, it’s media queen Oprah Winfrey. The talk show darling has openly struggled with emotional eating, for years, discussing her problems in depth on her hit show. She very publically lost weight in the 80s, showing up on her own show looking slender and dragging a wagon filled with fat to demonstrate how much weight she lost. But she soon packed the pounds back on, and in 1992 she reached her heaviest weight at 237 pounds.

But by 2005 Oprah had bounced back at a lean 160 pounds. She worked out endlessly, ran a marathon, and avoided bread at all costs. But a pesky thyroid problem slowed down her weight loss in 2007, and her weight began creeping back up again. Most recently she dedicated an entire cover of her magazine to her current weight gain, and vowed to get her diet and exercise habits back on track. We think she looks fabulous no matter what the scale says. Do you agree?

LeAnn Rimes Makeover: Fab Or Fail?

LeAnn Rimes began her rise to fame as a pudgy “Star Search” contestant with big hair and big dreams. At the tender age of 13, LeAnn belted out hits like “Blue,” which put her on the map as one of country’s hottest stars and evoked memories of Patsy Cline. While wearing too much makeup and outfits worthy of worst-dressed lists, LeAnn quickly climbed the country charts and became an international star, but LeAnn admitted having issues with overeating. “I turned to food at times because I had nowhere else to get that love,” she said. LeAnn not only covered her weight with awkward outfits, but also dealt with the embarrassing skin condition eczema, which left her skin red and scabby. “In the summertime, it would be on my neck and arms and I’d wear turtlenecks to try to cover it up,” she said.

At 19 years old LeAnn married backup dancer Dean Sheremet and quickly began growing up into a slender, sexy superstar. Reportedly it was her new hubby who encouraged her to get into a workout and diet plan that included low fat foods and yoga. “It’s fun to exercise with a partner — we both push each other to be better,” she said.

In 2007, LeAnn appeared in Shape magazine and the former awkward kid worked the cover wearing a red, white, and blue bikini. She began gracing the red carpet in elegant designer gowns and threw away her cheesy denim getups that the old LeAnn would wear. Her full makeover from shy naïve wannabe singer to full-fledged slender vixen was complete when in 2009, LeAnn was rumored to be having an affair with her Lifetime movie Northern Lights co-star Eddie Cibrian, who was also married at the time.
