Jennifer Lawrence Was On Fire In So Many Ways: Our #2 Celeb Who Dominated 2012

Jennifer Lawrence is No. 2 on our celebs who dominated 2012 list

On our list of 12 Celebs Who Dominated 2012, we’ve had stars who earned heaps of critical praise for their work; who garnered awards nods left and right; who found massive followings of fans; and who graced the covers of our favorite magazines in fashions high and low — but very few have done all of the above the way Jennifer Lawrence did. She started off the year as the star of  a highly anticipated franchise aimed at teen girls, The Hunger Games, and she’s finishing as an awards-show favorite for her very grown-up role in Silver Linings Playbook. Along the way, she’s charmed us with her self-deprecating interviews the way Katniss never quite could for Caesar Flickerman.

Dominating Moment: As the Girl Who Was on Fire, Lawrence drew a whole lot more than teen girls to the theaters to watch her battle other kids to the death in The Hunger Games. The movie had the biggest ever opening weekend for March, and went on to rank as the third biggest movie of the year, behind behemoths The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises. She also managed to follow that up with a little horror flick, House at the End of the Street, and a heartbreakingly funny role as the widow helping Bradley Cooper get his life back on track through ballroom dancing in Silver Linings Playbook, earning herself a Golden Globe nod. Kristen Stewart Made Major Movie Magic And Survived A Scandal, Making Her #3 On Our 12 Celebs Who Dominated 2012

Kristen Stewart‘s an established industry stalwart, and she spent 2012 riding the high of two blockbuster films (Snow White and the Huntsman and Breaking Dawn – Part 2) and a well-received indie (On the Road). But nothing quite says domination like true redemption, and perhaps the most amazing thing she did in 2012 was survive a “sex scandal” — a.k.a. the entertainment media’s favorite past time. Yes, she was caught cheating on her long-term boyfriend with her older, married director, a low point for sure. But it was how she handled the aftermath — with a very raw apology, wise career choices (adios, Cali) and a brave face at promotional events — in addition to her stellar career, interview red carpet moments, that earned her a spot on our list. It’s one thing to make movies that sell. But it’s another thing to rise above personal drama to be born again as a bigger person … and bigger star.

Dominating Moment: Celebrating and promoting On the Road at Cannes, a professional high point for anyone in the movie biz. It didn’t hurt that she also showed up to boyfriend Robert Pattinson‘s Cosmopolis premiere in Cannes showing off her tightest red carpet game ever.

We Redneckognize Honey Boo Boo’s Greatness, Make Her #4 On Our 12 Celebs Who Dominated 2012

Honey Boo Boo Is #4 On Our 12 Celebs Who Dominated 2012

How can a show Adam Levine once called “the decline of Western Civilization” end up being one of the highest-rated cable shows this fall? Well, how many other shows feature an adorable kid, non-stop farting, extreme couponing and a pet chicken named Nugget? As far as we know, just Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. At this rate it would have been criminal not to make Honey Boo Boo star Alana Thompson and her family into a reality show. At least that’s what TV viewers 18-to-49 seem to think. Love them or love to hate them, you can’t possibly be surprised that Honey Boo Boo is number four on our 12 Celebs That Dominated 2012 list.

Channing Tatum Made Us Laugh, Cry And Lust After Him, So He’s The #5 Celeb Who Dominated In 2012

Who would have thought that a funny name, an inauspicious start in an all-dance movie and a sordid stripper past would eventually be the perfect equation for a leading man. His star has been rising for a while but this was truly the year the world fell head over heels in love with Channing Tatum. Maybe because he turned his dance talents into a weirdly serious film about stripping called Magic Mike, maybe because he healed our amnesia in The Vow, maybe it’s because we can’t stop laughing at his scientific equations from 21 Jump Street, maybe it’s even because we saw him romance his real-life wife again in 10 years. Or maybe we just like that mug of his.

Dominating Moment: That would be the release and subsequent American obsession with Steven Soderbergh’Magic Mike, because even when they were wearing clothing, it was actually good!

Dominating on Twitter: Chan has just over 3 million followers. He also has an Instagram account under the name … ready? channingtatumunwrapped.

Best Appearances: Probably on the cover of People’s Sexiest Man Alive cover? Or GQ’s Man of the Year?  Maybe it was the Magic Mike trailer that showed his butt? Or, also, his stripping act on SNL?

What We Expect From Him in 2013: More gratuitous butt shots, please. Oh, yeah, also, his baby with wife Jenna Dewan-Tatum, plus the release of G.I. Joe: RetaliationSide EffectsWhite House Down. After he finishes work on a couple more (dozen) movies, he says he’ll be taking a little break. Maybe we’ll let him.

Matthew McConaughey Stripped Down To Become #6 On Our 12 Celebs Who Dominated 2012

Matthew McConaughey went indie to dominate in 2012

In recent years, it was easy to forget that before he was a rom-com staple in films like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and The Wedding Planner, Matthew McConaughey broke into the industry in a little independent film, with his scene stealing performance as the slimy David Wooderson in Richard Linklater’s 1993 cult classic, Dazed and Confused. But this year, McConaughey returned to those indie roots. The hunky Texas native proved that he was more than just hot arm candy next to the Jennifers and Kates out there by choosing smaller films with accredited directors who stretched him as an actor. And the work paid off. He gave hilarious and nuanced performances in films like Bernie and this summer’s sexy success Magic Mike that gave him the acting cred we always knew he deserved. It doesn’t hurt either that McConaughey married his longtime girlfriend Brazilian bombshell Camila Alves at his Austin home. It all helped us see past those blindingly beautiful abs of his.

Dominating Moment: It’s safe to say that this was his performance in the surprisingly dark Magic Mike. He stole the show as Xquisite strip club owner Dallas, who had us at his gyrations in those leather chaps. We love how the notoriously shirtless actor winked at the audience with this bare-chested role and even nodded to his 1999 arrest as he played the bongos during the Tarzan striptease scene. By showing us that he’s in on the joke, the actor exuded self-effacing charm, even while betraying Channing Tatum’s Mike.

Dominating on Twitter: McConaughey isn’t necessarily known for his Twitter presence, but his 282,259 followers would probably say otherwise. The actor utilizes the site to promote his catchphrase-powered philanthropic endeavor the Just Keep Livin Foundation, promote his movies and show his Longhorn pride.

Best Appearances: McConaughey did his fair share of press promoting a record number of films this year in addition to Magic Mike (Killer Joe, The Paperboy, and Bernie to name a few) from The Daily Show to The Tonight Show. In June, he and Camila graced the cover of People, sharing photos of their laid back Austin wedding weekend. But we have to say, his scooter cooler race against Jimmy Fallon was pretty epic and is now our new favorite backyard barbecue activity. It just goes to show you can take the man out of Texas, but you can’t take the Texas out of the man.

What We Expect From Him in 2013: McConaughey already has several projects lined up for him that will continue to push him into a serious A-list actor territory. His role in Dallas Buyers Club already has people talking about his extreme weight-loss to play a man with HIV in the ’80s. We hope this is JUST for the movie and he’ll go back to his healthy six-pack ways! He’ll also be costarring with Leonard DiCaprio and Jonah Hill in The Wolf of Wall Street and is teaming up with friend Woody Harrelson for TV series True Detectives. We’ve loved seeing more of you, Mr. McConaughey, and can’t wait to see you continue to surprise us.

Just By Being Born Blue Ivy Carter Reaches #7 On Our Celebs Who Dominated 2012 List

Was there ever a more highly anticipated baby than the offspring of Beyonce and Jay-Z? Well, maybe. But it sure was fun following the story of Miss Blue Ivy Carter, from Mama Bey’s mimed announcement at the 2011 VMAs to all the rumors that she’d be giving birth on New Year’s Eve, to the stories of the lavish gifts the pop/hip-hop/fashion-diva-to-be received from the likes of Oprah and Kelly Rowland. We’ve yet to see much more of the precious one other than the back of her head, and yet we already love every inch of it.

Dominating Moment: Perhaps it was being born? Lil Blue was born on January 7th at New York City’s Lenox Hill Hospital. Did she have her own private wing? Of course she did. She soon charted on Billboard, featured in her dad’s ode “Glory.” Now ask  yourself what you’ve done lately.

Dominating on Twitter: Baby Blue can’t quite tweet yet, although many a Trending Topic has been assigned to her name. There are, however, quite a few parody Blue Ivys, and perhaps Blue is a Twitter late starter like her mom, whose account just tweeted for the first time in April, with already over 5 million followers.

Best Appearances: No word on what Blue’s first word was (or might be?) but as soon as she’s ready to give comment to Us Weekly, I bet we’ll be seeing cover story placement. Meanwhile, Blue’s been seen out on the town with her mom, dad and Auntie Solange.

What We Expect From Her in 2013: Blue Ivy turns 1 in January, and you bet it’ll be the best first birthday anyone’s ever seen.

Lena Dunham Is Getting Paid To Be 24 Again, Just Only One Of The Reasons She’s #8 On Our 12 Celebs Who Dominated 2012

Lena Dunham Is One Our List Of Celebs Who Dominated In 2012

Getting paid to mine your own life for humiliating moments is pretty much our dream job, so it’s only natural we pay Lena Dunham homage as one of the 12 Celebs Who Dominated 2012. Remember when Girls premiered on HBO on April 15 of this year and the internet exploded? Remember how that happened after Dunham had already made her first feature film Tiny Furniture in 2010? Man, we could write 5,000 about Lena’s awesomely brave Girls nude scenes or that time Hannah flies face-first off Adam’s bike, but chances are you’ve already seen them. If you haven’t…well, where were you this year?

Damian Lewis Plays World’s Most Lovable Sociopath And Dances “Gangnam Style,” Making Him #9 On Our 12 Celebs Who Dominated 2012

Look, Internet, it’s time we have an honest conversation about our shared desire to get it on with Homeland star Damian Lewis. Because I know it’s not just me and Carrie Mathison going crazy over the ginger, who plays Sargent Brody on Showtime’s jazzy, one-hour mind-f—. Onscreen, he’s a brooding and terrifyingly sociopathic terrorist and yet oh-so vulnerable and tender; a kind dad who somehow tolerates the world’s most annoying teen daughter in the world.

Off-screen he’s goofy and gregarious, and that gravelly voice is even sexier because — surprise! — he’s British. Let’s celebrate our sexiest man of 2012, shall we?

Frank Ocean Penned A Beautiful Note And Sang About Strippers To Land At #10 On Our 12 Celebs Who Dominated 2012

It was the year of the underdog. Odd Future crooner Frank Ocean went off on his own and captured the world’s attention with his stellar songwriting. Doing very few interviews, and rarely figuring on TV or in front of paparazzi cameras, even during the promotion of his debut album Channel Orange. Ocean let his music speak for itself. With one big exception: the letter he wrote on his Tumblr on July 3. It was a missive that he’d originally planned to include in his liner notes disclosing that his first love was a man. His coming out was met with cheers from fans and peers, who applauded his bravery. A week later, his debut shot to No. 2 on the Billboard charts selling over 130,000 units in its first week. Frank Ocean’s smooth voice, impeccable songwriting and low-key profile are why he’s #10 on our list of celebrities who dominated 2012.
