There’s a chemistry on American Idol that makes the show enjoyable to watch, mainly due to Simon Cowell‘s authoritative and acerbic judging style, as well as his at-time contentious relationship with his fellow judges and host Ryan Seacrest. Former Idol producer Nigel Lythgoe thinks that once Simon leaves the show, the void will be too much for any one person to fill, which may be true. His suggestion? Clean slate – replace all the judges, not just Simon.
Lythgoe tells the blog Zap2It “I would replace the entire judging panel.” He also says frankly “I don’t think it really works replacing one person. They don’t have a great deal of chemistry at the moment. Ryan Seacrest and Simon have fallen out. It’s uncomfortable to watch. Ellen DeGeneres hasn’t worked out as well as we would have hoped.” If he had his druthers, he explains that his ideal judges’ panel would consist of “Elton John, Usher and Paula Abdul.” Not a bad lineup, but unfortunately, Lythgoe is no longer associated with the show, so it’s doubtful that this dream team will ever come to be. We do like the idea of a complete overhaul though – Kara DioGuardi and Ellen aren’t doing it for us this year, and Randy hasn’t done it for us ever, dawg.

Last week we brought you the news that Crystal Bowersox, American Idol‘s dreadlocked guitarist with the voice to beat, had a minor meltdown and threatened to quit the show. Bowersox reportedly had to be talked down by Ryan Seacrest who convinced her that staying on the show would enable her to provide for her family.
In the next chapter to this story, former Idol contestant Katelyn Epperly, you remember, she’s the one with the Carole King hair and too-tarty-for-DioGuardi look (p.s. that’s totally a Kim Zolciak song waiting to happen) divulged that Bowersox was none too pleased with Seacrest after that news broke. Even though Bowersox Tweeted “No apologies for being human. Life is always testing one’s strength and weakness threshold. That’s how we learn how strong we really are,” to show that she had no plans to quit the show, she sent Epperly a text that read “I’m fine . . . betrayed by Seacrest!” Is it just us, or does that sound like the name of a perfume? “When you want to smell like spray tan and skinny ties…Betrayed, by Seacrest.”
This is going to make this week’s shows all the more interesting to watch – will there be tension? Is this story blown out of proportion? Will all this gossip and spotlight time actually take a toll on Crystal’s performance (which, by the way, is supposed to be an “inspirational” song)? Guess we’ll find out tonight!

When Simon Cowell changes his mind, he changes it hard. The once confirmed bachelor is apparently pulling out all the stops for his upcoming marriage to Mezhgan Hussainy, with family claiming there will be at least four services held. “Last year he said he was never, never, never going to get married,” his brother Tony said on Real Radio. “This year he’s getting married four times, once in Brighton [England], once in L.A., once in Barbados on a yacht, and once in Hollywood.” Wait a sec—one in LA and one in Hollywood? Is he getting married on air or something? Considering the line-up of singers he could probably wrangle to perform, it certainly could merit an audience of millions.
On top of the multiple grand functions, Cowell has ex-girlfriend/Brit celeb Sinitta planning at least one doozy of an after-party. “The theme of the wedding is Miracles Do Happen. Simon getting married just goes to prove it,” she recently told The Mirror. “It will be a pretty surreal do, Salvador Dali-inspired. There’ll be angels and all sorts everywhere. It will be amazing.” No word on when we can expect the melting clocks and demons, but we’re sure there will be plenty of ads once they figure it out.

Crystal Bowersox, in our opinion, is the clear frontrunner to win American Idol this season. Her performances are consistent, she knows who she is, as the judges like to say, and she’s the anti-star – the total opposite of someone like Adam Lambert, who seems to relish the spotlight and the fame thrust on him. Turns out that spotlight is actually too much for her dreadlocks to bear sometimes, as TMZ reports that Bowersox walked off American Idol two weeks ago and had to be convinced to stay in the competition by Ryan Seacrest.
The report claims that Bowersox wanted to leave the show to reunite with her family in her home state of Ohio, allegedly asking “What’s the point?” to staying in the competition. Seacrest lured her back by telling her “The greatest thing I ever did was make enough money so I could buy my mom a house. You can buy your mom a house.” You just had to bring her mother into it, didn’t you Ryan? Actually, it’s a good thing he did, we don’t know who we’d root for otherwise. It’s just too bad she (and all the contestants, really) have to be subjected to dance numbers and group songs like the one above. That would make anyone wonder what the point is.

We have mixed feelings about a report today that claims the Paula Abdul may return to American Idol next season. A source tells In Touch that the Idol producers “want Paula back. They’re not sure if she’d be the fifth judge, but they are talking to her.” The source says that Paula would return after Simon Cowell departs the show to work on his new series, the American version of The X Factor. On the one hand, yay, Paula might come back!! On the other – boo, the Paula-Simon dynamic is what made her brand of crazy so watchable – will she be as fun to watch without him there to rag on her?
Sounds like this scoop though is just a rumor, as omniscient observer and Crest Whitestrips spokesmodel Ryan Seacrest claims to have no knowledge of it. In a recent interview with the L.A. Times, Seacrest said of Cowell’s departure “I don’t know what it will be like without him next year. You certainly cannot recreate Simon Cowell. You cannot recreate the role he played and you can’t do anything that’s derivative, if you will, of what Simon has built, and will continue to build. I think there is a big question mark. I don’t know because I don’t know who is going to be there.” Considering all of Paula’s other failed reality show negotiations, we think her return to Idol as Simon’s successor would be triumphant. Guess we’ll have to wait and see how America votes.

We’ve always been critical of Kara DioGuardi on American Idol because she tends to mug for the camera and flirt obnoxiously and basically act like an unpleasant person, despite her knack for writing catchy pop songs. Basically she rubs us the wrong way, which is why it grosses us out to see her pose for Maxim wearing next to nothing and now, posing for Allure in literally nothing. Perhaps what freaks us out most about this shot is that to us it looks like she’s in diaper-changing pose, her bare, waxed butt is just so IN OUR FACE. DioGuardi explained that her photo session “was less about beauty than about taking a risk and showing people a side of me they have never seen.” Indeed.
And we’re all for tastefully done nude shots, by the way – the accompanying photos, seen here on the Allure site, of Emmanuelle Chriqui, Jessica Capshaw, Regina Hall and Colbie Caillat don’t bother us one bit. We might have to address our DioGuardi issues with a therapist soon, it’s becoming a problem.
American Idol has been, by all accounts, PAINFULLY TERRIBLE this season. Even the singers we like – namely Siobhan Magnus – have been bombing as of recently, and we wonder: “How did these people make it into the Top 10?”
Watch each singer bomb at BestWeekEver.tv‘s American Idol video compilation.
Conan O’Brien and NBC are going to go down in history as one of those Hollywood relationships where we only remember the bad stuff, despite all the good years they had together. Unfortunately even after the Tonight Show drama, the bad stuff keeps coming. This week, O’Brien was negotiating to take part in Fox’s Idol Gives Back, American Idol‘s annual charity fundraiser, but unfortunately for people who love Idol and Team CoCo, he’s unable to participate due to his contract with NBC contract.
The problem is that after departing The Tonight Show, O’Brien signed a contract stating that he wouldn’t appear on television until May 1 – enough time to grow a crazy beard and change lives one Twitter user at a time, sure – but that means he can’t even make guest appearances for charity until then. Idol Gives Back is set to air on April 21. A contract’s a contract, but we feel like not allowing Conan to appear on a show whose sole purpose is to raise money for those in need further cement’s NBC’s Scrooge McDuck image. At least we still have Conan’s stage tour to look forward to. [Photo: Getty Images]
Earlier in the week, we excitedly told you that Paula Abdul was gearing up to host yet another talent competition, this time a revamp of our old fave, Star Search. Once again though, Paula’s contract disputes and a push for a huge payout have put that rumor to bed.
Abdul was reportedly offered $5 million to remain at American Idol this season, a figure that she rejected since, after all, Simon Cowell‘s judging expertise was going to net him eight bajillion dollars*. (*Approximate figure.)
Star Search and the ABC network were willing to offer her even less, at which point Paula decided enough was enough with the lowballing**, and she took herself out of the running. (**Sarcasm.)
At this point, we’re not sure what amount of money will appease Paula, she does realize we’re in a recession, right? [Photo: Getty Images]
Good news to anyone suffering from Paula Abdul withdrawal…America’s favorite incoherent judge of talent is coming back to television. EW is reporting that Paula is finalizing a deal with ABC to host a reboot of Star Search. We give this idea three and three quarter stars! (We watched that show way too often as a kid.)
The new version of the show is slated to launch this summer, presumably after American Idol is finished for the year so there won’t be any direct competition with her former employer. ABC reps refused to comment on the specifics of the deal, but we’re most interested in what kind of money Paula will be making. After all, money is the reason she left Idol, so we hope her new gig will compensate well. Otherwise, she’ll be left shilling for Cash-4-Gold like her predecessor, Ed McMahon. [Photo: Getty Images]
