Bridesmaids, Hunger Games, The Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn Part 1 Nominated For MTV Movie Awards

Is this the dawn of a new era? The 2012 MTV Movie Awards nominations were announced today, and we’re not sure whether to be surprised about them: The Hunger Games and Bridesmaids lead the pack, with eight nominations apiece; Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 and 21 Jumpstreet follow with six nods each; and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 is way down on the list with only two nominations. After so many years of Twilight mania ruling the show, does this mark the end of an era? Maybe. But it’s also pretty obviously the result of the nominees being chosen entirely by a panel of actors, producers and other insiders rather than by fans as it was last year, when Eclipse lead the pack with eight nods.

Of course, Twi-hards should be relieved to see Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in their time-honored slot among the Best Kiss nominees. As we predicted, they’ll be going liplock-to-liplock with Hunger Games’ Josh Hutcherson and Jennifer Lawrence — along with Crazy, Stupid, Love’s Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, Deathly Hallows’ Rupert Grint and Emma Watson, and The Vow’s Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum. When VH1 News caught up with Hutcherson last month, he didn’t think he had too much of a chance to beat Robsten.

Bridesmaids Co-Star Chris O’Dowd Wavers On Sequel

Maybe we’re beating a dead horse here. But we prefer to think of it as being really devoted journalists when we keep asking everyone involved in Bridesmaids about the possibility of a sequel. At the Oscars, director Paul Feig skirted the question, saying, “Ask Kristen!” Kristen Wiig told the Hollywood Reporter that she and co-writer “aren’t planning a sequel. We are writing something else.” Universal seemed to be toying with the idea of milking that cash cow with or without her. The movie’s breakout star, Melissa McCarthy, said she thinks that’s a terrible idea. But Wendi McLendon-Covey gave us a little more hope, saying it’s all a matter of time — and someone coming up with an idea that’s even better than the first.

So how about the movie’s unassuming heartthrob, Chris O’Dowd? He seems on the fence. “I don’t know, it’s tough,” he told VH1 News on the red carpet of Epix’s Secret Policeman’s Ball last weekend. Read more…

Paul Feig, Wendi McLendon-Covey On A Bridesmaids Sequel: “Talk To Kristen!”

Seeing as how Bridesmaids was up for Best Original Screenplay (along with co-writers Annie Mumolo and Kristen Wiig), it was only natural that we’d want to know how soon its sequel will be raking in the nominations. 2014? 2020? The year 2525? When Janell Snowden caught up with the film’s director Paul Feig and costar Wendi McLendon-Covey on the Oscars red carpet, however, the answer seems to come down to one very special rubber-limbed lady. “Talk to Kristen!” Feig laughed. If by “talk,” Paul means “clutch the hem of her Oscars dress and tearfully beg her to start writing it already,” then we are way, way ahead of him!

“Someone needs to think of an idea that’s as good or better, and then someone has to have time to write it. And so far, nobody does!” McLendon-Covey added. “We’re all super busy. Kristen has back-to-back projects for probably three years, at least…It’s not that nobody wants to do it, because we all do. We don’t want to do it just to do it.” Okay, let’s all just start brainstorming now! Let’s see…maybe Kristen’s character can get pregnant? Wendi and Ellie Kemper can have a torrid love affair? Melissa McCarthy‘s seven golden retriever puppies can form an all-dog baseball team? We are grasping at straws here, people!

Seth Meyers And “Genius” Kristen Wiig Bring The Hotness To Vogue

Kristen Wiig‘s Vogue profile is basically a mushy love letter from every single person she knows. As it should be! “I don’t know if anyone ever showed up better equipped for the show than Kristen did,” SNL head writer Seth Meyers gushes. “She was immediately great at it, and it’s a very hard job to be great at. Her characters were broad but built out of incredibly subtle observations.” Sean Penn, Wiig’s costar in the upcoming film The Comedian, might have them all beat in the compliment department, though. “I don’t go to a dinner party where people don’t refer to her as a genius,” he claims. “She’s a writer, she can invent characters and stories, and she has a touch that translates. It’s her game to play.” Man, if only the Target lady could see Kristen now. You know she would approve.

As with most famous ladies, fame brings with it fashion, and in the article Wiig praises Alexander McQueen, Nina Ricci and Isabel Marant as her favorite couture. “I always say I want to look haunted.” the Bridesmaids star said of her Golden Globes Bill Blass frock.  The only flaw we could find in the profile? The writer describing Kristen as “the face to watch in female comedy.” How about the face to watch…winning an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay? The face to watch…killing it on your TV every week? The face…who looks great despite what said face’s owner thinks? “I’m going to need a lot of under-eye work,” Wiig joked about hitting the red carpet. “Concealer.”

Bridesmaids Director Paul Feig Really Wants To Be A Guest On The Howard Stern Show

Paul Feig, creator of Freaks and Geeks and director of Bridesmaids, is a Howard Stern Show superfan. And I, Kate Spencer, creator of a really good bowl of cereal that I just had for lunch, am a Paul Feig and Howard Stern Show superfan. So naturally, when I interviewed Paul at the People’s Choice Awards this month, the first thing I blurted out was: “I want you to be a guest on Howard Stern!”

I’m guessing this is the first time Feig’s ever encountered a reporter trying to match-make him with a radio show, and his response was priceless. “I wanna be on there!” he exclaimed, as Wendi Mclendon-Covey looked on with a smile. “Please Howard, have me as a guest. I won’t be a bad guest.” Paul’s been a fan of the show for over thirty years, starting back when Howard first went on the air in his native Detroit in the early 80s. “I’m one of Howard’s biggest fans!” He said. “I love Howard; I love the whole gang.”

If you’re not familiar with Feig’s work, pick up a copy of his hilarious memoir “Kick Me,” to learn all about his awkward adolescence, which so wonderfully inspired Freaks and Geeks, arguably one of the best TV shows ever made. He’s also an Emmy-nominated director of shows like The Office, Arrested Development, Nurse Jackie, Weeds, Parks and Recreation and Mad Men. He’s hilarious, he tweets pictures of his wife posing with Uggie the dog at the Golden Globes, and has been a Stern fan for over thirty years. He’s guaranteed to be an amazing guest, especially when paired with the King of all Media (aka the King of all Interviews).

Howard Stern is the best interviewer around (Who else could get David Arquette and Courteney Cox to discuss their divorce together?! And get Lady Gaga to open up for almost two hours? And get Chris Martin to actually speak about his marriage?)  - and I’d love to see him dig into Feig’s dorky past and insanely successful present. So Howard (or Gary, or JD, or Jason, or Bobo) – what do you say?

SAG Awards: Ladies’ Night With The Help And Mo(o)re


Well, obvs, they hand out SAG Awards for both men and women — but with the big movie ensemble Actor going to the ladies of The Help, our memory of Sunday night’s ceremony might be skewed toward how much the ladies dominated the stage. This is, after all the organization that sticks to the old-school feminist “female actor” designation rather than “actress.” There was Mary Tyler Moore receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award, as we were reminded that people doubted there’d be an audience for a show about a single woman. Representing that other awesome female cast, Bridesmaids stars Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph and Melissa McCarthy livened up an otherwise too-sincere evening with their “Scorsese” drinking game (do they have to take a drink every time someone blogs his name, too?) And even the In Memoriam montage featured a great sendoff from Elizabeth Taylor, winking at us from beyond. It was enough to give pause to anyone who’s been rooting for The Descendants or The Artist to take home the big prizes come February 26 — do you really want to stop the momentum of all this amazing girl (lady) power? Do we want to be deprived of the sight of Octavia Spencer dancing around as Viola Davis makes us cry? Well, when the alternative is a good George Clooney speech or tricks by Uggie, that’s a tough question. Good thing we’re not voting on these things.

Oscar Nominations 2012: Hugo Leads With 11!

The nominations for the 84th annual Academy Awards were announced this morning, and Hugo surprised everyone, taking the lead with 11 nods. The Artist was close behind, with 10 nominations. Leonardo DiCaprio’s J. Edgar and Ryan Gosling’s Drive were shut out of any major awards, but Supporting nods for Bridesmaids’ Melissa McCarthy and Moneyball’s Jonah Hill should please a lot of folks. On our homework list: A Better Life (star Demian Bichir is up for Best Actor), Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (ditto for Gary Oldman) and Animated Feature nominee A Cat in Paris, just for its awesome name. Kristen Wiig Gets Darren Criss’ Awards Season Vote

Darren Criss’ new Broadway career is to blame for him missing last night’s People’s Choice Awards and won’t be at the Golden Globes this Sunday. But while he’s filling Daniel Radcliffe’s shoes in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, he’s also crossing his fingers for awards season wins for his co-stars on the big and small screens.

“Kristen Wiig is up for several awards and of course I’m rooting for her,” Criss told VH1 this week. The two recently starred together in the upcoming comedy Imogene, in which Criss plays a young Backstreet Boy impersonator who winds up in a relationship with Wiig’s character, a woman who’s been placed in her mother’s custody after faking a suicide attempt. Of course, it’s her previous down-and-out character in Bridesmaids that’s earning all the kudos this awards season: Bridesmaids won Favorite Comedy Movie at the PCAs, it’s up for Best Ensemble and Best Comedy at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards tonight, and she’s up for Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globes, where the movie is again competing for Best Comedy.

“I’m a little biased, but she doesn’t need my good vibes! She did a killer job in Bridesmaids,” Criss noted. “I think it’s tough to be a funny Hollywood lady. It’s a tough business, it’s a man’s business, comedy. It can be kind of tough. She’s risen above the ranks of many. I wish nothing but the best for her.”

Of course, Glee is also nominated for Best Comedy Series at the Globes. But Criss isn’t too upset about missing the award show to perform as J. Pierrepont Finch on Broadway, calling it “a fine reason to not go to the Golden Globes. I’ll take that any day!”

Golden Globe Noms Add Ryan Gosling, Jonah Hill, Rooney Mara To Awards Season Mix


That wacky Hollywood Foreign Press Association is at it again. The HFPA announced the nominees for the 69th Golden Globe Awards, and the list has a few surprises, and lots of things we actually like. The fact that the Globes separate drama movies from musicals and comedies always makes for a rather inclusive group of nominees. Previous 2012 awards season frontrunner The Artist tops the nominations here again with six, and The Help and The Descendants are tied in second place with five apiece.

George Clooney’s busy year has garnered him plenty of recognition here: He’s up for best drama actor for The Descendants, and for best director and best screenplay for The Ides of March. Both films are up against each other for best drama (up against The Help, Hugo, Moneyball and War Horse). In the lead drama acting categories, Ryan Gosling (for Ides) and Rooney Mara (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) are the two newcomers. The supporting actor and actress categories also line up with the trends, with the exception of Jonah Hill (Moneyball) and Viggo Mortensen (A Dangerous Method). Seriously, for the others, look back at every other list we’ve published so far.

Bridesmaids, 50/50, The Artist, Midnight in Paris and My Week With Marilyn make up a very solid musical/comedy category. And we can’t even imagine how to place bets for the musical/comedy actresses: Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids) is the only actress on the list not to be an awards season regular. The musical/comedy actors are a more eclectic bunch: Ryan Gosling (for Crazy, Stupid, Love.), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (50/50), Brendan Gleason (The Guard), Jean Dujardin (The Artist) and Owen Wilson (Midnight in Paris). One more anomaly worth mentioning: Madonna, whose W.E. track “Masterpiece” is up for best song.

The Help, The Artist Top SAG Noms – But Stunt Cast Honors Are Way Cooler

The Descendants, The Artist and The Help seem to be three of the biggest films so far in the 2012 awards season race. But the Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations were announced this morning, and The Help and The Artist were leading the nods with three apiece, while the George Clooney flick picked up only two. In the hottest contest, for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, The Artist and The Descendants are up against Bridesmaids and Midnight in Paris. The actor category recognized Clooney, The Artist’s Jean Dujardin, Brad Pitt for Moneyball, Leonardo DiCaprio for J. Edgar and A Better Life star Demian Bichir. The lead actress contenders are Glenn Close for Albert Nobbs, as well as the same four ladies that have been nominated all season long already: Viola Davis for The Help, Meryl Streep for The Iron Lady, Tilda Swinton for We Need to Talk About Kevin and Michelle Williams for My Week With Marylin. The supporting actor and actress categories also closely resemble every other kudosfest so far (though, sorry, Drive fans, Albert Brooks was left out of this one).

There are plenty of familiar faces in the TV categories too — Boardwalk Empire, Breaking Bad, Dexter and The Good Wife are up against newcomer Game of Thrones. (Good thing there’s no “you win or you die” rule here.)

The most exciting nominations to us? The stunt ensembles! The Adjustment Bureau, Cowboys & Aliens, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, Transformers: Dark of the Moon and X-Men: First Class are the movie casts up for the prize. And the Dexter, Game of Thrones, Southland, Spartacus: Gods of the Arena and True Blood ensembles compete in the TV category. Wait, can that one be an arena battle, instead of a vote? Pretty please?
