This video was so sad to watch. It features a fresh-faced, gorgeous Brooke Burke sitting down in front of the camera and revealing that she has thyroid cancer. She found a small nodule on her thyroid while going in for a regular physical a couple of months ago. She reveals that the initial biopsy was “atypical” — the could not determine whether it was benign or malignant — but after a battery of tests, it was determined to be cancerous. “I never ever ever thought I was going to get that phone call with bad news. I’m ready to deal with it, and I’m going to be fine,” she says adding, “Doctors say this is a good kind of cancer to have. Good cancer — that sounds so crazy! But my doctor did tell me that this is a happily-ever-after kind of thing.” Oh man … this news really blows. Brooke says she’s scheduled for a thyroidectomy, “which means that I’m going to have a nice big scar right here across my neck,” she explains. Another really touching revelation is when she says, “I guess the truth is, I’m always so used to being in control and taking care of everybody and all my kids [she has four children], and now I find myself in this really out-of-control situation. I’m going to be a really good patient and I’m going to do everything that I need to do.” We wish her all the luck and our good wished for the surgery and her subsequent recovery.
Kellie Pickler did tweet a heads up yesterday, saying, “It’s been a great life-changing day.” Followed by another message that read, “Be sure to watch “Good Morning America” tomorrow morning (Sept 5th). You won’t want to miss this!!!” So we knew something big was coming up, but what exactly, was anyone’e guess. And what emotional, amazing news it turned out to be, as you can see in the video above! Kellie sent a tape to the show of her shaving off her lovely blond hair, which she did in Nashville the day before GMA aired. No, this wasn’t a random, attention-grabbing segment in any way at all. Kellie did so to show support and empathy for her BFF (ever since they were kids), Summer Miller, was was diagnosed with breast cancer in June and starts her chemotherapy today. 35-year-old Miller’s like a “sister” to the singer, who said she wanted to show solidarity with her, as the treatment involves losing hair — so they’d both go through it together, with two shaved heads as opposed to one. Kellie also wanted to talk about cancer detection, and has stated to ABC News, “Cancer does not discriminate,” with Miller adding, “If this compels even one person to change their mentality toward waiting until the age of 40 for their mammogram, then it will be worth it.” We couldn’t agree more, and we applaud Kellie for having so much love in her heart. And we’re sending Summer heaps of strength and our best wishes.
In July 2009, Beastie Boy Adam Yauch announced he was battling cancer in his salivary gland. After months of treatment including surgery, radiation, Eastern medicine and a vegan diet, his bandmate Mike D announced that Yauch is now cancer-free.
The 46-year-old rapper put the Beastie Boys on the back burner while he underwent treatment, but it appears that he’s now ready to get back to work. Mike D explained that the group plans to work on a video and the second part of their latest album Hot Sauce Committee Part 2, though their plans for touring are uncertain and depend on Yauch’s health. Yauch also worked on a film that we can’t wait to see called Fight For Your Right Revisited, a short based on the group’s hit song featuring Seth Rogen, Will Ferrell, Jack Black and Susan Sarandon among others. That premieres at Sundance this month.
This is awesome news, and we’re thrilled that Yauch is healthy and back in action.
We’ve all been concerned and waiting to hear updates about Aretha Franklin ever since she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. She had surgery for her condition late last year and had released a hopeful statement during her recovery which read, “The surgery was highly successful. God is still in control. I had superb doctors and nurses whom were blessed by all the prayers of the city and the country. God bless you all for your prayers!”
Aretha’s latest interview with JET has been more revealing (in a manner of speaking) about how she’s been coping with the situation. She’s definite in not divulging personal details but succinctly says her condition has been “resolved”. She explained, “I am not going to even deal with that. I don’t have to talk about my health with anybody other than my doctors. The problem has been resolved.” She refused to discuss her personal life, stating, “I am not one to do a lot of talking about my personal health or business. Not too much, not too much. There are a lot of people who will talk about anything, as long as there is somebody listening. But I am not one of those people. That’s not Aretha.”
With all this privacy shrouding her responses she did want to send out a proper message to her fans. Aretha capped off the interview with gratitude towards them saying, “I know my fans are concerned. Let them know I am feeling great and coming along.I want to thank my fans and friends and supporters who have prayed for me and sent me beautiful cards and flowers. Please continue to respect my privacy as I continue to recover.” We wish her our best.
This is really sad news to report: Aretha Franklin has cancer. The diagnosis was confirmed by her family yesterday after the 68-year-old singer underwent surgery for previously unknown reasons last week. According The National Enquirer, the cancer is pancreatic, and diagnosed months ago.
Following the surgery, Franklin released a statement reading, “The surgery was highly successful. God is still in control. I had superb doctors and nurses whom were blessed by all the prayers of the city and the country. God bless you all for your prayers!”
Those were hopeful words, but this new information suggests that her troubles are far from over. Her old friend the Rev. Jesse Jackson urged fans to keep the faith, telling the Associated Press that the Queen of Soul’s “spirits are high, and her faith is strong. She’s conscious, communicating and taking daily walks up and down the hall. She has amazing strength—body, religion and faith. It’s what he keeps her going.” We’re praying she keeps strong and fights this.
Michael Douglas getting cancer came as a nasty surprise for everyone. Most of all to his wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones, who has a bone to pick with his doctors. She revealed, “It makes me furious they didn’t detect it earlier. He sought every option and nothing was found.”
Apparently, Douglas had been steadily complaining about pain in his ear and throat. Catherine is incredibly surprised none of the doctors found anything then, because it was only three weeks later that a walnut-sized tumor was found under his tongue. And they were ready for the bad news, it seems. “It wasn’t a huge shock,” she added. “I knew something was up. He knew something was up.”
Douglas’ cancer is at stage four and has spread to his neck and parts of his head but he still has an incredibly positive attitude, telling David Letterman, “I’m treating this as a curable disease. It’s a fight. I’ll beat this.”
Zeta-Jones has understandably taken the news hard, telling People, “The hardest part is seeing his fatigue, because Michael is never tired.” Our prayers are with both of them, and as Zeta-Jones also added, “if there’s anything Michael has, it’s strength.” Amen to that.
It’s been a bumpy year for Michael Douglas. It started off rough, with the trial of his son, Cameron Douglas, for dealing drugs. We’re sure he found some respite and joy in his wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones getting knighted by the Queen (she is quite the dame). But now, unfortunately, bad news is back.
Douglas has cancer. It was discovered after a tumor was found in his throat and the 65-year-old  actor is currently preparing himself for eight weeks of chemo and radiation therapy. The good news is that he is expected to make a complete recovery and even commented, “I am very optimistic.”
We’re sending him heaps of good wishes and hope he’s healthy and back on his feet soon.
