You know, it’s possible that Leonardo DiCaprio & Blake Lively are just fast friends. After all, they’ve got a lot in common. Leo’s a respected A-list actor who enjoys the company of glamorous fashionplates. Blake’s a glamorous fashionplate who’d like to be an A-list actor. Gossip Girl‘s Ed Westwick is in his new J. Edgar movie, too—there’s plenty to talk about! Our point is that Page Six spotting Leo & Blake at Cannes, walking “around the grounds together” and “looking like a couple,” doesn’t mean anything. There are plenty of reasons a newly unattached superstar playboy would be spending time with a hot-to-trot aspiring actress. Projects and stuff.
As you might remember, Page Six said Leo and Blake were flirting in January, at the same Jeremy Renner birthday party a drunk Christina Aguilera notoriously crashed (seriously, Renner is a megastar now). With Bar Refaeli having left her post as Leo’s long-suffering sidepiece, it certainly would be advantageous for an ambitious young thing like Blake to take Bar’s place at the occasional Lakers game. Here’s hoping she likes long conversations with Kevin Connolly and Lukas Haas!
It’s a shame Scarlett Johansson didn’t show up to support Sean Penn at the Tree Of Life premiere today at Cannes—then we would have had three Hollywood power couples on display! With the amped-up Terrence Malick booers sated by this morning’s screening, hopefully tonight’s viewing will be a little less intense. On top of the expected appearance of star Brad Pitt (trading the morning’s turtle-shell shades for a darker pair) and Angelina Jolie—banging in a giant Versace gown—Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale also walked the red carpet. While we can’t say we’re in love with Gwen’s sparkly, lowwwwwwww-cut pantsuit, we understand the pressure any lady that steps on Angelina’s red carpet must be under. Gavin’s blue suit certainly looks submissive to Brad’s tux.
See photos of both couples, Sean Penn and other stars like Zoe Saldana at the premiere—no sign of Life director Terrence Malick, though. He’s so shy!
Love her or hate her, Sarah Jessica Parker just wants to have you talking. While the Sex & The City actress has nothing to do with the acclaimed martial arts pic Wu Xia, SJP did a solid for pal Harvey Weinstein—who bought the film—and showed up at Friday’s Cannes premiere wearing an Ellie Saab dress that could be said to recall the gum-covered bottom of a school desk. Or would you call it striking and magnificent? Check out the gallery below and vote in our FABLife poll.
It just ain’t the Cannes Film Festival without a hotly debated film welcomed with catcalls, and this year’s Sacre Boo! trophy goes to Tree Of Life, only the fifth film in almost 40 years by reclusive director Terrence Malick (Badlands, The Thin Red Line). While there was reportedly a burst of booing following the film’s finish, the haters were quickly drowned out by cheers and applause, with most of the released reviews quite positive, or at least respectful.
Since we haven’t seen the two-hour plus movie about a suburban family in the ’50s choosing between “the way of nature” and “the way of grace” (though we did see Thor!), we can’t judge it for ourselves quite yet (Life hits the US on May 27th). We can, however, judge Brad Pitt’s ensemble at the film’s photocall this morning and…sacre ewww! White undershirt under white suit jacket, slicked-back mullet, turtle-shell sunglasses and a grody gray goatee? Maybe Malick skipped the press conference because he didn’t want to look at that.

It’s not every day that we write about Tilda Swinton — the eccentric actress normally stays out of the public eye unless she’s promoting a film or collecting Oscar nominations. Currently she is Cannes, where her film We Need To Talk About Kevin is generating major buzz. This means we get to watch Tilda in action on the red carpet and at press events, which is always a win-win. Seriously, this woman is so often overlooked for her sleek fashion choices. Sure she’s offbeat at times, but there is no denying the magic she is bringing to the south of France this week. At the movie’s photocall, she oozed elegance in a silky white blouse and pencil skirt with the stilettos of our dreams. Her bold n’ blue premiere dress was sleek and drape-y, hugging her in all the right spots. Teach us your ways, Tilda!
Uma Thurman is getting high marks for the Versace dress she wore to the opening ceremony of the Cannes Film Festival yesterday, but most of the pics being shared show Uma with legs (and gown) closed. Is it because of how much thigh the center split of her gown showed otherwise? The dress definitely made her the belle of this year’s jury (Jude Law didn’t stand a chance!), but do you think fashion watchers are looking at this thing head-on?
We figured Rachel McAdams was had something big planned when she showed up in France with that huge trunk yesterday! The actress traded Tuesday’s hat and trenchcoat for long blond curls and a sheer red Marchesa gown at the Cannes premiere of Woody Allen‘s Midnight In Paris, which she attended with co-stars Adrien Brody, Owen Wilson, Lea Seydoux and Michael Sheen—who also doubled as her date. Are you feeling this fiery look?
Check out the gallery for more shots of McAdams (check out that train!), plus a glimpse at the white dress she wore earlier at the Midnight In Paris photo call.
You really need to coordinate with your co-stars before doing one of these things. Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek are at the Cannes Film Festival to hype their upcoming Shrek spin-off Puss In Boots, though they must not have been hanging out before yesterday’s photocall at Carlton Beach. While Salma was dressed a striking crimson gown complete with boa, Antonio rocked a faded denim shirt and jeans, looking like your drunk divorced uncle about to be tossed from a salsa club for harassing the dancers. While they were bound to look ridiculous standing a top two giant, multi-story boots by the ocean, they didn’t have to look this ridiculous. See more shots from the obviously worthwhile promotional event in the gallery below.
Katie Holmes hasn’t really worked the romantic comedy angle since the 2004 flop First Daughter, but it looks like she’s giving the genre another try. The Hollywood Reporter says that producers at Cannes are looking to pre-sell the international rights for Responsibile Adults, which will feature Katie as a woman who realizes she used to babysit her young boyfriend, to be played by Chace Crawford. Though since the age difference between the actors is only about seven years, we wouldn’t say this really qualify as some cougar biz.
Holmes has been pretty busy of late, with the Guillermo Del Toro-produced thriller Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark and Jack & Jill with Adam Sandler set to come out later this year (her Sundance stinker The Son Of No One, with Channing Tatum and Al Pacino, is still waiting for a release date). While none of her recent roles—even that high-profile turn as Jackie Kennedy in The Kennedys—has grabbed critics or audiences, you certainly can’t fault her work ethic.
Would you believe the awkward woman pushing her way through this group of men with her luggage in Nice, France is actually a gorgeous actress making her way to the Cannes Film Festival? Find out who’s red carpet bound after the jump!
