If you take stories like The Hunger Games, The Host and Warm Bodies to heart, you might think we don’t have much to look forward to in the distant post-apocalyptic future. But in the more immediate days ahead, like say, the rest of 2013, there’s a whole lot to be excited for — especially if you like ladies who kick ass, stand up for what they believe in and protect their loved ones at all costs. It’s going to be a great year for heroines in movies, on TV and in books — but not necessarily the easy-to-love/worship kind. Jennifer Lawrence‘s Katniss Everdeen (this year in Catching Fire), The Americans‘ Elizabeth (Keri Russell), Beautiful Creatures‘ Lena (Alice Englert) and The Great Gatsby’s Daisy (Carey Mulligan) are complex women and girls who don’t automatically know what’s right, and sometimes they have to choose saving themselves over saving the world. The Mortal Instruments‘ Clary Fray (Lily Collins), Shadow and Bones‘ Aline, Delirium’s Lena and Warm Bodies‘ Julie (Teresa Palmer) have a little self-discovery to do before they become full-fledged heroines. The Legend Trilogy’s June and The Host’s Wanderer/Melanie (Saoirse Ronan) have to navigate between worlds to figure out whom to fight for. And Oz‘s Glinda (Michelle Williams) and Ender’s Game’s Petra (Hailee Steinfeld) are ladies whose strength is obvious, but whose roles in the bigger picture remains to be seen. As for Chloe Moretz’s Hit Girl, who returns in this summer’s Kick-Ass 2 — she’s always going to be in a category all her own.
Whatever your favorite brand of strong female is, we hope you’re looking forward to seeing them in action as much as we are! Check them out in the gallery below, and plan your year accordingly!

This is one of those posts where we don’t want, or need, to write much, because all we want to do is squee! Lionsgate just released some stills from The Hunger Games next installment Catching Fire, and we’re loving these little sneak peeks. As y’all know, we’re solid fans of Sam Claflin portraying Finnick Odair, so the shot released a little earlier, of him trying to make Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) lose her concentration, made us go a little weak in the knees. The other two newly released shots include Katniss with Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) making a speech in what we think could be during their victory tour. The other is a behind-the-scenes look of the film’s director Francis Lawrence chatting with Lawrence and co-star Liam Hemsworth (Gale). Wonder what J.Law is grinning about? Enough talking, more pictures. How excited are you about the movie? We sure as hell are! Read more…
Well, we see everyone remembered to take their crazy pills this morning. What other explanation can there be for the rampant debate on Twitter and Tumblr over whether Sam Claflin is hot enough to be Hunger Games contender Finnick Odair, following the release of Entertainment Weekly‘s new Catching Fire cover. First of all, you can’t base a character or performer’s hotness on one photo. You have to look at all the evidence. Was Sam Claflin hot on the Catching Fire set in September? Yes. Was he hot leaping into the water while wearing a skin-tight wetsuit? Double yes. And if you have to base someone’s hotness on one photo, why not base it on EW’s inside photo of Katniss and Finnick? Are you looking at it now? Alright, alright.
So why are people doubting Claflin’s ability to pull off a character who is supposed to be hotness incarnate? If you ask us, it’s because both stars are clearly suffering from a case of Heinous Wig Syndrome (HWS), a terrible disease that also befell the Twilight casts during the last four movies of their franchise. Admit it: even Jennifer Lawrence looks less than amazing on this cover. Maybe those are special cinematic wigs that just don’t take to the close shots and heavy Photoshop of magazine photography. We don’t know; we never finished our Masters in Wig Studies. But keep the faith, everybody. We suspect Sam Claflin will have you furiously shipping Katniss/Finnick in no time. Seriously, did you look at that second photo? Humina.

What’s that one scene in Catching Fire where Katniss looks like a total bad ass? Just kidding, that’s every single scene. Photos from the Hawaii set of the Hunger Games sequel are hitting the interwebs, so it only seems helpful to break down what America is looking at. Based on the fact our tributes are perched on top of individual platforms in the photos, it looks like we’re at the Quarter Quell. The Quarter Quell occurs at the very beginning of the 75th Hunger Games, the moment before the real good stuff starts. And the good stuff starts very quickly. Did you notice that somebody is wielding a trident?
Jennifer Lawrence has been in Maui, Hawaii filming the next Hunger Games installment, Catching Fire and sadly wasn’t able to return to her hometown of Louisville for the Thanksgiving holiday. But luckily her family came to her, with her mother, father and brother joining her out on the beaches for the weekend! “My dad won’t have a deep fryer so I don’t know what he’s going to do,” she jokingly told E! News.
She was also without her boyfriend Nick Hoult for the holiday, which must have been a bummer. But still, compared to the brawl at Halle Berry’s house, and Lady Gaga’s home getting invaded by fans, we’d say that Jennifer won out for the better celeb Turkey Day. The gorgeous 22-year old actress gave one more thing to be thankful for this year as she hit the sand in a bikini top and colorful skirt! Head on down to the gallery below for more!

When we first saw an excerpt of Jennifer Lawrence on The Tonight Show, it was all about her “Fat Witch” Halloween costume, and we loved it. But then we saw the whole thing and realized that is the mere tip of the iceberg of the awesomeness that was this interview. We already knew the Catching Fire star loves eating Cheetos with her great boyfriend Nicholas Hoult and doesn’t care that she’s not twig-skinny like most Hollywood stars, but here are new things we learned about the endearingly normal, self-deprecating star as she promoted the Silver Linings Playbook last night.
- She got into a car wreck a couple of weeks ago because she mistook a breast cancer parade for a Honey Boo Boo parade while driving home from the Catching Fire set in Georgia. “It said ‘boobs’ on the [sign] but I thought it was saying Boo Boo,” she explained of how she rear-ended someone. She had to tell the person she ran into, “I’m sorry that I hit your family. I thought I saw Honey Boo Boo. Please forgive me.”
- On another Georgia adventure, she found herself at a “dive bar with senior citizen strippers,” getting a lap dance from an aggressive Bo Peep, who warned her not to touch her when she bent down, and “then she inserted her breast into my mouth.” Jen still tipped her, though.
We probably should have know when we saw him blowing those air kisses on the Catching Fire set that Sam Claflin was our kind of celebrity. The Hunger Games star’s adorably cheesy Twitter account only confirmed our suspicions. Everything he writes is exactly what we’d write if we’d suddenly found ourselves in a multimillion dollar franchise! To wit, Sam’s renamed Follow Friday…Follow Finnick Friday. Of course, that’s only one of the eye-rollers that we spotted on his Twitter. Our top 10 favorite are…
We haven’t heard a whole lot of news updates coming out of the Hunger Games: Catching Fire shoot going on in Atlanta — the few pictures we’ve seen do look appropriately awesome, though — but it must be going well. Well enough that Lionsgate has opted not to go the Twilight/Harry Potter route of having a different director for almost each installment. Deadline reports today that Catching Fire helmer Francis Lawrence will be directing the adaptation of Mockingjay, the third book in Suzanne Collins‘ dystopian trilogy. As had been previously announced, that third book will be divided into two movies, slated for release in November 2014 and 2015. That’s quite the vote of confidence, and it’s making us all the more excited for a peek at Catching Fire.

After completing her high-fashion transformation into the heart-shaped face of Dior, Jennifer Lawrence decided to mix it up a little by losing the couture and going as a regular person for Halloween. Or she just wore her glasses and let her air dry. Either way, Jennifer stopped by the Netherworld Haunted House in Atlanta yesterday looking less like a spokesmodel and more like a senior during finals week, if that senior happened to be drop-dead gorgeous and the finals happened to be in Escaping A Terrifying Goblin 101, The History of Mutant Pumpkins and Introduction To Weird Bloody Scarves.
Two things the doubters doubted: That Peeta Mellark would make it to his 20th birthday, and that Josh Hutcherson would make a convincing Peeta Mellark. Well, I guess I won’t spoil Peeta’s fate for the five of you out there who haven’t read the entire Hunger Games trilogy, but we’re so pleased that the latter came true this year. We imagine the adorable star is probably celebrating his 20th birthday today while surrounded by evil monkeys and electrocuting lakes while filming Catching Fire, so it’s up to us to fete him in a more, well, comfortable manner. We’re looking back at his 20 hottest looks — from casual awards-show looks, to fierce gun-toting on Red Dawn, to dapper red carpet suits. Take a look and tell us you don’t wish he’d come over and decorate a cake for you sometime.
