Naomi Watts Channels Lady Diana On Film Set, Joins Our List Of Scarily Accurate Historical Figure Portrayals

Naomi Watts as Lady Diana in new film

Naomi Watts was photographed on the set of Caught In Flight, the first big screen biopic of the late Lady Diana. The Australian actress sparkles in her portrayal of the English Rose, who tragically passed away 15 years ago this August. Crowds gathered around London’s Royal Opera House as Watts strutted past the red velvet roads in a form fitting sequined gown, clutching Diana’s signature hand bag. Due out in 2013, the film will explore the final two years of Diana’s life, including her romantic relationship with heart surgeon Dr. Hasnat Khan as well as her more famous tryst with Dodi Fayed.

Even though she totally looks the part, Naomi admitted to be “absolutely terrified” of playing the legendary princess. “She is a part of our history, an incredible woman and fascinating but a tragic ending,” she says in the Daily Mail. “The film-makers came to me and it’s a good script and it’s very scary and I kind of wanted to say ‘no’ but I couldn’t.” We’re glad she did, because she looks uncannily like the People’s Princess. We can’t imagine anyone else taking the role! Check out more insanely accurate celebrity portrayals of historical figures in the gallery below!

Is Jessica Chastain The Right Pick To Play Princess Di?

For anyone captivated by the fairytale wedding, public life and tragic death of Princess Diana, a Hollywood biopic seemed like only a matter of time. The matter of who should play the People’s Princess, however, seems like a matter of personal opinion. According to IndieWire, The Help‘s Jessica Chastain will be portraying the late Princess of Wales in the upcoming movie Caught in Flight. The film reportedly focuses on Diana’s alleged affair with Dr. Harsnat Khan, which director Oliver Hirschbiegel describes as “a love story between a princess locked in a tower and an ordinary man.” While the Tree of Life star is the latest casting pick, Keira Knightley was also up for the part. Hmmm, two talented ladies, one role that has “Oscar bait” written all over it. The movie doesn’t start filming until March 2012, which means we have plenty of time to ask ourselves the question…
